No thoughts off the top of my head about ASL, but I can tell you it's giving me all kinds of thoughts about Combat Mission!
Of course, since the designers of CM bought into the "SMG Squad" title and, as I said earlier, armed those platoons with just MP40s and the pair of LMGs, one could not actually replicate the tactics properly -- the ironic result is that in CMBO, the Volksgrenadier platoons are the most useful because of their tactical flexibility, exactly the opposite of what you've explained.
Oh well...
