it's just a game
Hello!
Michael brought up a cool thread idea (disguised as getting us back on track in the ASLOK thread) so here we go.......
Share some cool stories........
Roger's first ASLOK........
My first ASLOK was in 2001. I had met Cliff Welsh via the internet that spring. The look on my wife’s face when I said, “I met this dude from Meadville (45 minutes south) and I am going to his place next Saturday to play wargames” was priceless. I told her don’t worry I will see the candy before I get in the van……. SMILE!
Anyway, thus really started my ASL playing. I had about 5-6 games under my belt when Cliff told be about this cool gathering in Cleveland. “Well poop (did not say poop) that sounds cool I will head into town for one night”. I headed into Cleveland on Wednesday. I was nervous and had no freaking clue what to expect.
I go into the game room, and Mark Nixon introduces himself to me. Wait, I think, is this the dude I have been reading articles by for years in the General?! Holy cow.
I was not in the game room for 10 minutes when Rich Jenulis (great guy) walked up and asked me if I was looking for a game. My ASL kit was still in my hotel room (hey I was a rookie). He helped me haul it down to the game room and after I explained I was new to the game, he helped me learn new stuff and was as friendly as friendly could be (a theme for ASLOK). I played a couple of games that day staying up way early into the morning. Again I was a rookie and did not realize no one was gonna mess with my stuff, so I hauled it all back to the hotel room (SIGH such a rookie).
The next morning, I call the wife asking if she cared if I stayed another night. I got the green light.
Highlight of Thursday was meeting Jim Serafin, “hey wait a freaking deadhead!”………. we had at a game and then he changed my life by telling me about VASL. WAIT! I can play ASL via the internet and PBEM?!........ VASL is the reason I met Burnie, who has become a great friend.
Another highlight of Thursday, Alex Keys shows up and sets his stuff up. What the heck is all this stuff? Third Party Publishing? What is this? HOLY FRICK! TAKE MY MONEY!
Friday morning, I call the wife (stomach still flip flopping with excitement)…….. “mom, can I stay until Sunday?”…….. luckily I over pack clothes (never know when you will be on the road longer than you think)……….. Given the green light I skip down to the gaming room once again. That night (early morning), Wild Bill talks me into starting a scenario at 1:00AM………. Ah! To be that young again………….
It was over in a flash...... met great guys, got my butt kicked at the table (won a couple) and had an amazing time.
All in all one of the best times of my life. Everyone was so cool, helped the newbie and made me feel welcome.
I look forward to the return.
Roger
