Who the hell comes up with the time to play a scenario on this site?

...time to play thing influences the choice of scenarios for tourneys is, for the moment, only a guess, with no factual proof it ever occurred.
There are people here in this very thread that say they do use it to determine scenario picks. I have heard from more than half a dozen tournament directors that time to play from Scenario Archive is a very influential factor in giving scenarios a shot at being included to progress to the next step in their weeding out process.

I can go through my emails to dig up the ones where organisers have asked me to add the value to various reports if you insist, and we have to assume that they're the guys that feel there's some value there. Most often these are used as a guide before they check it out themselves.

Well, if the problem is real, it indeed requires to be solved.
Now, part of the solution would be that some tourney organizers use their brains and rely on their experience, rather than take an "AI" indication, to choose the scenarios of tournaments...

I just reread this entire thread and after doing so, I want to apologize to Dave for my tone and word choices.

In explanation, not excuse, I speak my mind and generally don't beat around the bush when I communicate.
This manner of speaking has won me few friends, but it is the way I speak. I don't always realize how harsh and aggressive my words are and in the case here, I acknowledge that the choices I made can easily (and rightfully) be construed as belligerent and combative.

You do yeoman's work with your ASL Archive efforts and have well earned your accolades, I honestly salute those efforts.

My words here were spoken in frustration with aspects of the site that I do not agree with at all--but, you didn't deserve the tone.

My sincere apologies, GF.

P.S. Keep up your great work!

Glad you agree.
As said, if a problem isn't hypothetical, but is linked to real data, it should be adressed.
As a side effect of this discussion, I discovered part of the way some TD choose scenarios.

It's derived a small new feature and if you do spot scenarios that look way out, it's good that people know they can get in touch and I'll update it.
Perhaps you can decrease the amount of playing time, with one hour for a dog scenario, and two hours for super dog scenarios, lol, of course that will have to be updated later on, after 40+playings recorded.

Never bothered much about the time calculations offered, but for my playing group of players we generally always bet the time length suggested.

Dave,
Did you ever dream that this DB of yours would become a main focal point for all things ASL?
Keep up the great work.

Ha - it really is only as good as the efforts of the community - and it's one of many great resources around. I'm grateful for everyone's support and only through their efforts does the site become truly useful.

Play the scenario. Take note of how long it took. Report

What I've done is added an extra field for players to add the time it took them to play the scenario as part of the reporting process. I know it's not perfect, but perhaps it's another data point to be used.
Very good idea!

When does the time start?
  1. When you pick up the scenario card?
  2. Start to pull counters?
  3. Start to contemplate a defensive strategy?
  4. First wind change DR?
When does the time end?
That's a great call-out - given that 1 & 3 could be planned out in advance by players, allowing for a long period of review of the card and strategy, and 2 is subject to their organization system, I would say the time is based on actual play time kicking off from 4 to ending when victory is declared.

4.
The time ends when one side wins.

As apparently the times are intended for tournament use, IMHO

time starts when you pick up the scenario card and
time ends when you have finished the scenario plus an extra couple of minutes added to clear the table.

PLAY. FORT’S. SCENARIOS

There.
I always used to put Fort scenarios in the tournament I used to co-run. I usually allocated the two hours before closing time at the pub on the evening before, so that the players could work out the VCs and SSRs prior to play...

;)

Here again is an arbitrary number thrown out there…”average player 1 hour per turn.“

Where is your data?
Are you an ‘average’ player?
How many ‘average’ players have you observed?
What method did you use to time and record the progression of the game?
Is every turn 1hr per turn from first to last turn?
Watching over 100's of games on VASL over 20 years.
Depends on the metrics to determine average.
Again, 100's
Visual observation.
Obviously not. some are 59min others are 61 min.
