Schwerpunkt Volume #24 will be released 10/8/24 at ASLOK

Schwerpunkt Volume #24
finally returns after a long, 7-year hiatus. Its 24-page booklet contains: Mike Augustine’s Volksgrenadiers: Innovation and Desperation, Brook White’s A Missed Opportunity and Evan Sherry’s Anatomy of a Rifle: Sturmgewehr 44 articles as well as our trademark analyses and designer’s notes for scenarios SP277-SP288. Each of the 12 scenarios is printed on collector grade, coated cardstock. The scenarios are in keeping with the Tampa ASL Group’s well-known tradition of tournament-sized as well as medium-sized actions. There's something in this pack for players of all experience levels!

Schwerpunkt Volume #24 is also a companion to Rally Point Volume 21: Volksgrenadiers 1944-1945 and as such, it is recommended that the two are best enjoyed together.

SP277 Ragged Guard - BORSAVA, Slovakia, 9 October 1938: Slovakian HO-42 attacks (with 11 squads, a light tank, a tankette and an 80mm gun in support) to clear a Hungarian Ragged Guards infantry company from a group of buildings along a railroad. Mike Augustine designed this fast-playing, 4.5-turn, tournament level action set on boards 33 and 48.

SP278 Tirailleurs Counterattack East of BESMÉ, France, 5 June 1940: Elements of the 17e Régiment Tirailleurs Algériens, and 36e Bataillon de Chars de Combat (with 10 squads and 3 FT-17M tanks) are counter-attacking elements of German Infanterie Division 72 (with 7.5 squads) defending on board 75. Brook White designed this 6.5-turn, tournament action. Here’s a chance to make your lifelong dream of conducting a successful overrun attack with an FT-17M tank finally come true.

SP279 Scorched Snow IRDYN, Ukraine, 23 December 1943: If you enjoyed SP202 Fiery Finale, here’s another alliteratively titled, incendiary scenario sure to ignite and fuel the burning desire of all pyro-maniacal ASLers throughout the hobby’s infernal regions. Ten squads from 2nd & 3rd Companies, 5th SS Freiwilligen-Sturmbrigade are on an arsonistic odyssey with 2 flamethrowers, Molotov Cocktails and 2 supporting StuG IIIGs in an attack that encourages them to kindle and torch their way to every one of the 13, troublesome 294th Rifle Division and local Irdyn Partisan squads defending their fortuitously wet, sylvan village enclave. The never-to-be-extinguished, one-man scenario smelting furnace, Mike Augustine, forged this fabulous, 4.5 turn, fun-filled festival of flame set on half-boards: 47, 52, 67 and 74. This soon-to-be classic barn burner is sure to light your fire.

SP280 Foiled at Frenouville FRÉNOUVILLE, France, 19 July 1944: Elements of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, 5th Armoured Brigade, Guards Armoured Division are attacking with 17 squads, 5 Sherman tanks and 3 Carriers to clear elements of SS-Panzer Grenadier Regiment 25 and Kompanie 1, SS-Panzerjager Abteilung 12, SS-Panzer Division 12 (consisting of 13 squads and 3 JgPz IVs) from 7 of the 9 victory buildings. This medium-sized, 6.5 turn scenario features the new Late War SS rules, lots of movement for both sides and plenty of tense action set against the otherwise peaceful background of the bucolic French countryside so lavishly portrayed on half-boards 11b, 12b, 54 and 84.

SP281 Hühnersuppe KLEINSCHELLENDORF, East Prussia, Germany, 23 October 1944: Elements of the 1099th Grenadier Regiment, 549th Volksgrenadier Division and 3rd Batterie, 276th Sturmgeschütz Brigade (with 11.5 squads and 5 supporting StuG IIIs) attack elements of the 11th Guards Army that are defending a village with a hearty helping of 11 savory squads and 2 deliciously supporting SU-76Ms, 2 KV-85s and 2 T-34 M43s. Only fresh saltine crackers for your soup can add to the enjoyment of playing Mike Augustine’s exciting, 5-turn, medium-sized scenario set on half boards 14a, 75, 85 and 90 that is sure to satisfy any hungry man hankerin' for a pipin' hot bowl of Eastern Front action.

SP282 Then Came the Inferno – Bergstein, Germany, 6 December 1944: Elements of Grenadier Regiment 980, Volks-Grenadier Division 272 are attacking (with 15 squads, 3 StuG IIIG(L)s and 3 JgPz IV/70s) to clear a village of the American, 10th Tank Battalion & Company C, 628th Tank Destroyer Battalion supporting the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division who are defending with 8 squads 2 Sherman tanks and 2 M-36 GMC tank destroyers. This is an intense, high-lethality action which gets down to business right away. Expect the 9-2 leaders of both sides and the American 90mm guns to inflict heavy casualties on the combatants. This exciting, 5.5-turn, tournamax scenario set on board 12a will test the determination of attacker and defender alike.

SP283 Beggar Lice GIESENHECK, Germany, 9 December 1944: Sturm Company, 980th Volksgrenadier Regiment, 272nd Volksgrenadier Division is counterattacking (with 13 squads including assault engineers with DCs and FTs) to retake bunkers and buildings on a hill. Elements of 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division are defending with 7 squads who eventually receive an infantry platoon as reinforcements. The Luftwaffe also makes a rare but brief Schwerpunkt, red-shirted special guest appearance in the form of one lone 1944 fighter bomber in this taut, 5.5-turn scenario, set on boards 77, 89 and 90.

SP284 Aufklärungs Attack IPOLYVISK, Upper Hungary, 26 December 1944: Elements of Panzer-Aufklärungs Abteilung 3 and Flak-Abteilung 314, Panzer Division 3 are attacking (with Pumas, a Wirbelwind and a delightful assortment of three different flavors of German halftracks) to clear 7 squads and 4 SU-85s of the 21th Guards Tank Brigade from buildings and a road segment. This fun, fast-moving, 5.5-turn tournamax scenario set on boards 71 & 72 will test the German’s ability to defeat TDs with light armored vehicles and the Russian armor leader’s skill at hitting small moving targets.

SP285 The Muzsla Noose - MUZSLA, Upper Hungary, 11 January 1945: This scenario is perfect for those times when you have three players. Here, elements of 1st Battalion, 6th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 21st Guards Tank Brigade are making an encircling attack with two different elements (totaling 21 squads 2 T34/85s, 2 T34 M43s and 4 SU 85s) to secure 5 of 7 buildings on boards 64 and 65. The Hungarian 53rd Pioneer Battalion, the 16th Assault Artillery Battalion and 3rd Tank Regiment, Hungarian 2nd Armored Division are conducting a 360 degree defense (with 16 squads, 2 Pz IVHs and 3 Hetzers) in the face of an ever-shrinking perimeter. Can your Hungarians hang in there for 5.5 turns or will they reach the end of their rope and succumb to the noose?

SP286 Death’s Head Denoumouent - HORITSCHON, Austria, 31 March 1945: Elements of the 5th Guards Tank Corps are attacking the village on board 10a (with 12 squads and 4 T-34/85s) to eliminate the 587th Volksgrenadier Regiment’s 6 squads while elements of SS-Panzer Regiment 3, SS-Panzer Division 3 launch a counterattack (with 5 squads, 3 Tiger Is, 2 StuG IIIGs and 2 SPW 251/1s) to rescue the Volksgrenadiers. This is an exciting, 5.5-turn, tournamax-sized scenario featuring tense action and lots of movement for both sides.

SP287 The Vienna Bypass JUDENAU, Austria, 8 April 1945: This is Eastern Front action at its finest. Three deadly SU-100 tank destroyers of the 912th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment together with four T-34s and infantry from the 21st Guards Tank Brigade, are attacking to capture three, board 12b buildings from Kompanie 9, SS-Panzer Regiment 3, SS-Panzer Division 3 which is defending with 9.5 SS squads, 2 Tiger Is and a FlaK 18. The Russians have 5.5 turns to secure three buildings and exit two AFVs off of the board. This is a high firepower scenario featuring a fierce village battle and exit requirements that are sure to keep the Russians moving.

SP288 Commanding from the Bridge - East of HADEMSDORF, Germany, 11 April 1945: Elements of Marine-Füsilier Bataillon 2, Marine-Infanterie Division 2 and Heers-Panzerjager-Abteilung 661 (with 14.5 squads, 2 JgPz IV/70s, a PSW 222(L) and 2 halftracks) are attacking 45 (RM) Commando, 1st Commando Brigade (8 squads) that is dug in and defending a patch of woods ringed by a road. The Germans have 4.5 turns to clear a road segment on boards 62 and 85 of this determined group of Commandos. This exciting scenario uses new research from John Russell’s Theirs the Strife (2021) which revises much of his earlier work in No Triumphant Procession (1994) and features 5-3-7 squads that more accurately portray the German Kreigsmarine infantry. This is a fast-playing scenario that features intense close combat and frequent ambushes.

I look forward to the Ragged Guard scenario. I like it when there box is expanded.

How do you "enjoy them together?"
I was waiting for someone to ask that question. I’m glad it was you. It’s one worth answering. Obviously, they are each products that can stand alone, especially Schwerpunkt Volume 24.
The first part of it is Mike Augustine’s feature article that is a comprehensive look at the formation and organization of the Volksgrenadiers. It sets the stage for understanding this new squad and the organization of which it was a part.
My essay on the STG-44 further amplifies some of his points and provides a little more context regarding the weapon’s performance and its characteristics that provide the basis for the 5-3-7 squad.
Another important part is provided by the detailed scenario analyses of the VG scenarios in Schwerpunkt 24. These are the result of our extensive playtesting and allow us to share some of the interesting characteristics of the 5-3-7 squad and how it performs, its limitations, its advantages and the way it interacts with various adversaries in both attack and defense. They are different than the German squads we have used over the decades and what we learned, enjoyed and experienced are worth sharing with the ASL community.
Schwerpunkt, with the exception of SP5 and SP6, is not a theme based product. It also has only 12 scenarios which traditionally feature a variety of scenario types. We purposefully designed many more VG scenarios than would fit into SP, therefore they had to go into something theme based, enter Rally Point 21.
Once we started designing and playing VG scenarios, more ideas kept appearing and soon we had even of more of them than we needed for RP21. More importantly, we really enjoyed the experience which was definitely a different one than we were accustomed to with 5-4-8s, 4-6-7s and 4-4-7s.
Rally Point Volume 21 is essentially an extension of SP24. But, if players are not interested in the historical context of the articles or the in-depth tactical analysis of VG squads on the cardboard battlefield or if they just want to save a few bucks, then Rally Point 21 can certainly be enjoyed on its own.
Rally Point 21 does have a concise paragraph for each scenario that gives some tactical advice and that can be enough. However, reading a detailed analysis of one of SP24’s VG scenarios can also offer some valuable insight into RP21 VG scenarios because the very nature of ASL scenarios, with their many parallels, offer some lessons/tactics that are somewhat universally applicable even in slightly differing situations.

Here’s what I’ll say about these two products: if another producer of ASL products had released products like this, I would have acquired them. I like historical articles as long as they are closely ASL related. I also very much enjoy scenario packs. But sometimes a scenario pack without more context leaves me wanting more. The pair of these products reconciles that for me.

I’ll close this rather long answer with one last point. I have always considered Schwerpunkt to be a publication well-suited to the ASLer who is a thinking man. The Schwerpunkt Volume #24 booklet contains 25,000 words. That is a lot of reading. There’s not much fluff in it either, no silly cartoons and the few graphics in it are directly related to the subject matter. But the primary goal of every volume of Schwerpunkt is to promote better play of ASL, both tactically and within the context of understanding those tactics in relation to the ASL rules. I think coupling it with RP21 is therefore altogether fitting and proper.
Schwerpunkt has been away from the ASL scene since 2017 and I figured it was time for it to return to ASLOK where it all started for us in 1996.

I was waiting for someone to ask that question.
I'm not a swinger; I can only play one scenario at a time. I know there are those parties where everybody puts their tweezers in a bowl and then you close your eyes and pick one and have to go home with that person, but call me old-fashioned, that's just not for me.

I wish that Schwerpunkt were available via retailers in EU-Europe.
But as far as I know, that's not the case, correct?

Ordering direct from Second Chance Games here in the UK could be an option
(though, saying that, since that silly Brexit business it might cost you something extra :( )

That's exactly the issue - since that silly Brexit business, UK is outside EU, and this entails customs etc.
Nevertheless, thanks for the hint - I can check out, if it is worthwhile or if shipment/customs are so high that they effectively blow up the deal.
