I've played ASL and VASL quite a bit, but because of some personal circumstances I have been away from the game for a couple of years. I'm finally at a point where I might be able to get back to the hobby, and I just got a new computer. I'm starting to get the itch to play again.

But what's up with VASL? It appears to me the site is down.

The old VASL is gone.

Check out the links and instructions in:

Might need to scroll down a bit.

Welcome back.

EarthPig is close to your location, as well as the Windy City Group. Maybe you can link up with them or attend the Winter Fest run by Brien Martin.

Okay, I scrolled down a bit. I find a link that takes me to an ASL wiki, but I don't see instructions for VASL (or whatever it is nowadays). What am I supposed to be looking for?
Try this. they have a vasl icon at the top of thier websight

But be careful downloading the VASSAL engine, the newest one is not compatible with VASL 5.9.2 there is a newer version of VASL coming but as far as I know it is not yet done.:)

Okay, I found the instructions, and I found out the hard way that the latest version of VASSAL doesn't work with VASL 5.9.2. So, in your opinion, which versions of VASSAL and VASL do I want in order to get the latest and greatest gaming experience?

There is also a group of ASL players in the Denver area (Front Range ASL AKA FRASL).

A bit of a trek from Lincoln, but if one happened to be in the area. I've traveled further for gaming.

They have a Yahoo group at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/frasl/

Marty is pretty good about approving new members quickly.

Okay...but the only available versions on the Wiki page are VASSAL 3.0.17 and 3.1.15. Where can I get 3.1.9?
I'd try 3.1.15 the 3.1.9 may not actually have been the last version before 3.2 I was just using Cleavin's description:hush:

I had this very same problem when I inadvertently updated my VASSAL without knowing it was not compatible with the latest version of VASL. I had to re-install VASSAL to version 3.1.20. Here is an index of VASSAL releases (thanks to a forumite that I've since forgotten--may he be showered with a continuous rain of Rep):

3.1.20 is compatible with VASL 5.9.2, which I think is the latest version.

Good luck with the care and feeding of you VASL virtual dog :)

Okay, I'm getting warmer. I have VASSAL and the VASL module installed along with a few boards.

Now, my LOS check is telling me, "LOS engine disabled...could not read bd02.map"

What's that all about?

They killed off the LOS engine it no longer needed/working/worth the effort to fix. Gotta do it the old fashioned way.

Yes, not all boards are updated. Keep in mind, it never really worked. "scrapes one pixel" showed up as blocked, which is not at all the rule in ASL.

So does this mean that, no matter what the LOS checker says, we now have to eyeball the line ourselves and see if a shot is truly blocked or hindered?
