Where's YOUR Blight?

Where I live, Longmont CO, we have an old abandoned sugar beet processing plant that I not-so-affectionately call "The Blight":


This photo doesn't really do justice to just how run-down this facility is; one really needs to drive by it in order to appreciate just what a hole it is. Why the city has not had the guts to raze it is beyond me.



In short, it belongs in Stalingrad.

So naturally, as I drive by it every day, I think about capturing it on an ASL board.

And as it happens, I'm doing a geoboard for LFT that would definitely be a place where The Blight fits in.

And as it ALSO happens, there's plenty of other places on this map that we've sketched out for Large Ugly Factory Type Things (LUFTTs).

So. While I really do enjoy drawing LUFTTs, rather than rely on my own imagination for these things, I wanted to put out a call to see if anybody had their own Backyard Blights that they'd like considered for capture on this board. Post pics here, along with coordinates if you got 'em. Who knows, maybe YOUR back yard will be captured forever in ASL Lore.

Egad, Gordon, this is a family website!

Nice Blight! Mr. Blightwell gives it a 9.5, with added bonus points for Petrochemical Blight, Blight Next To Water Bodies, and Blight With Train Tracks. About the only reason it didn't get a 10 was Degree of Difficulty - this IS Chicago, after all, so we kinda expect it. And you didn't say how close you live to it - closer scores more BPs.

But oveall, an excellent submission!

So you know there wuz a non-trivial molasses flood at that place in the winter 1990?

Fortunately it's on the opposite side of Chicago from me, but I've travelled past it on many occasions and the smell is something else. It's also probably had a negative impact on my drinking water. Does it earn extra blight points for having the Horseshoe Casino right next door?

I noticed the town of 'Pleszow' in the Krakow image. Would this be the site of the infamous labor camp featured prominently in 'Schindler's List'?

Not sure. This is a bit close to population for a death camp (the Nazis were nervous about people finding out)? Not sure about a labor camp? There is a fair amount of industry in the area. Not real familiar with the background to Schindler's List.

Until a couple of years ago we had our own blight in suburban Oxford City. The Wolvercote (suburb) Paper Mill. As a kid I could hear the horn go off every morning at 7:30am calling the men to start work. They have knocked it down now and built a posh housing estate. As far as blights go this was a posh one.

My ex-wife was "from Chicago". When I'd remind her that she was actually born in Hammond, INDIANA, she'd get pissed beyond all repair. Must be a midwest thing.

Another one from Oxford. The car factory in Cowley, East Oxford. Greatly reduced in size now. I rarely saw it because I hardly ever go to East Oxford.

Plaszow was initially operated as a forced labor camp supplying slave labor to the nearby armaments factories in Krakow and a stone quarry. Later Plaszow was operated as a concentration camp in addition to its function as an arbeitslager (sp?). Seems to be one in the same to me.

Probably the same place, although the events in Shindler's List happened a few years before the Soviets built the Steel/Iron Works that I'm talking about.

I imagine they probably built the Iron Works on the ground used by the labor/concentration camp?

Back in the day us kids would explore places like that. I remember the underground Nike missle site we could sneak into. Probably not a good idea but its just standard procedure for a troop of kids.

I saw that on TV, Mysteries Of The Abandoned I believe. That place is huge!

That is some truly fabulous Blight; +10 BP for Soviet Brutalism.

Big fan of the Stinking Pits of Toxic Waste and the Coal and Debris Piles. No idea how to do the various elevated conveyor belts, which are everywhere in this facility, but still, this is some great stuff.

My wife is also familiar with me commenting on buildings: "Good Rust". This is an example, from the Whiting Refinery mentioned upthread. Really nice texture there.
