"Griffey Jr. to White Sox?"
Great trade for the Sox if we were writing this in 1998. What did they give up?

I thought Swisher had some speed but they said he doesn't get to many balls.Yikes. I'll admit I was kinda' shocked they were really playing Swisher in center as he seemed an average corner guy, but I haven't seen him enough to properly judge.
BP's defensive numbers don't have Swisher as that bad in center -5 Runs vs. Average last year and -1 this. Compare that to Jr. who they had at -19 runs in '05 and -17 in '06 vs. average. If you can believe those numbers, Swisher is a lot better, albeit in a small sample size, but I can't believe Jr.'s D has gotten any better in the last 2 years. The Sox pitchers could be in for some real fun soon!
Let's face it, even the Reds realized he was so bad in center now that they moved him. When the hometown team admits it, you know it has to be true...
Pitcher Nick Masset and IF Danny Richar"Griffey Jr. to White Sox?"

Essentially nothing except $. Nick Massett (4.63 ERA in 32 relief appearances) & Danny Richar (25 year old 2b hitting .262 in AAA & far worse in the bigs) were the players. The Sox are on the hook for half of Jr.'s contract allegedly which includes a $4M buyout of his $16.5M option year - I think he's making in the range of $8-10M this year so call it about $4M for August/September plus the buyout of the option.Great trade for the Sox if we were writing this in 1998. Wait until they see Jr.! Frankly Griffey was a little shakey in right in the 2 games I saw him play in Cleveland. He didn't make any glaring mistakes (unlike say Johny Gomes), but he just didn't have that feeling of confidence you used to get watching him play the OF. He was constantly adjusting until the last second and wasn't judging balls quickly off the bat. If they're really going to play him in center, it could end badly IMO.I thought Swisher had some speed but they said he doesn't get to many balls.
Bay is hitting .282 with 22 HR and 64 RBIs (.519 SLG & .894 OPS). That is in the pitiful Pirates line up. He should get more protection in the Red Sox line up. Manny hits for a higher avg and slightly better OPS. Bay is younger, better defensively, and much cheaper. :thumup:Guess Boston was finally actually tired of the Manny saga.
Presuming you believe Bay's '07 was a total fluke, he's a decent replacement for Manny, a lot cheaper and signed thru '09. Plus Bay has to play better D than Manny.
LaRoche is a nice pickup for Pittsburgh if they felt they had to move Bay. He could grow into a real player. If the Dodgers don't make the playoffs, they could really regret making the deal unless they feel picking up Manny's option at $20M per is a wise move. Not to mention they are overcrowded in the OF already. Unless they plan to Manny at short, I don't really get this deal from their POV. Just another excuse to not play the kids in the OF like Kemp & Ethier? Brilliant. 'Course given I despise the Dodgers, it's win-win from my perspective
That's true enough, but I wonder if it was worth losing both Moss and Hansen? If the roster space now open is suitably filled-and Theo has shown in the past a keen eye-then the initial panning of the move may soften a bit.Theo is notorious for letting go of aging players at the right time and letting other teams suffer thru their twilight years.

Manny?
Shows how big a tool he is that they had to give up so much to unload him. That's true enough, but I wonder if it was worth losing both Moss and Hansen? If the roster space now open is suitably filled-and Theo has shown in the past a keen eye-then the initial panning of the move may soften a bit.
Hey he's got Casey Blake protecting him now! :laugh:Lets see how Manny does in pitcher friendly Dodger stadium without the protection the Red Sox gave him.
Let's turn it around.Lets see how Manny does in pitcher friendly Dodger stadium without the protection the Red Sox gave him.
Agreed.Let's turn it around.
Let's see how Ortiz does without Manny's protection.
Correction: he used to be. He has dropped off the past couple of years. Not even close when he tanks it like he has the past couple of weeks.Manny must have REALLY been a tool for the Sox to trade him. He's the best and most feared right handed hitter in baseball. The Sox will not be the same without him. Yankee fans have got to be celebrating.
