I’ve got Beyond Valor and Paratrooper, so now I’m wondering what should I get next. Is there a logical progression? I see a lot of ASL products that are out of stock. With this in mind what is available that would be the most reasonable for me to acquire next?

How many scenarios do you have in BV?

If you are going with 1st edition, there are many sets for sale on FB marketplace...for cheap.
2nd edition..not so much

The 'logical' progression from my perspective would be to acquire the 'big four' nationalities first:

  • Germans
  • Russians
  • US
  • British
Then continue with the next nationalities:

  • Japanese
  • French
With BV, you have covered Germans & Russians for now.

I do not know which core modules are currently available, but experience in the past has shown that one should buy while they are there. Otherwise, you might have to wait for a reprint for years or pay ridiculous prices at eBay.

So if you ask me, these are on your list:

  • Yanks 2nd edition
  • For King and Country
  • Rising Sun
  • Croix de Guerre 2nd edition

But before you dump a lot of money into acquiring ASL kit, play a few months to verify ASL is the game for you. I have all the modules so we can play any nationality you like.

Zeke
I appreciate that.

I’ve narrowed down my interests to the Eastern Front, US airborne troops in France, and the PTO with US Marines and the British/ANZAC. A close follow-up would be the British/ANZAC/Gurkhas/Indians in Burma.

Does the Rising Sun have special rules for jungle combat or is it covered in the ASLRB?

Yes, lots of special rules in there.

If you want to find out about ASL modules this is the place to go: https://www.desperationmorale.com/world-of-asl/introduction/

If you want to play the PTO, then with regard to the ASL Core modules, you need

  • Yanks 2nd edition (for US)
  • Rising Sun (for Japanese, Chinese & Marines)
  • For King and Country (for British)
PTO rules are included in Rising Sun.

If you want the rules only, then you could go for the Pocket Edition of the ASL rulebook.
The Pocket Edition of the ASL rulebook is a good buy in any case. It does not, however, include the Vehicle Notes (of Chapter H). There is a Pocket Version for (all) the Vehicle notes as well.

Depends on your nationality preference. Which of these are you most interested in?

U.S. Army - Yanks
British/Commonwealth - For King And Country
Finns - Hakkaa Paale!

Modules beyond this have dependencies that require 1 or more other module (besides Beyond Valor), for example you may be interested in the French, but the scenarios in Croix de Guerre requires something like 3 other modules to play them.

Another way top find out if PTO is really what you like, get the Eletronic Rulebook and play via VASL first, to get an idea and feeling for that Nation.

In that Rulebook you'll find the PTO Rules with an Up2Date Chapter H and also Chapter W wich are the Korean Rules.

Might drop the preassure to buy all modules at once...

Even if I’m a Luddite with a computer? Just how hard is VASL?

Hey! If I can figure it out, and I'm an old gravel agitating, ground pounding, door kicking grunt, you should have little difficulty with it. People here are more than willing to assist as well.

It is software, so you should be able to cope. ;)

But seriously, it is not that difficult to set up. And once you've got it running, it works very well.
After all, you have to consider that it is ASL-nerds that have been working on it for roughly two decades...
