A10.61 TERRAIN BONUS: There is a -1 DRM to any Infantry Rally attempt which occurs in a building, pillbox, trench, or woods.
B30.5 ROUT & RALLY: A pillbox is equivalent to a building for both rout [EXC: Known enemy units; see 30.7] and rally purposes ...
A10.51 DIRECTION: ... Assuming it can abide by the previous requirements, a routing unit must move to the nearest ... building or woods hex (even if overstacked) unless that route is ...
From all of that, I take it a trench, even though it is Rally Bonus terrain, is NOT a valid rout destination. A trench is not even a valid rout destination in a DTO scenario (I know a unit can rout to a trench, it just can't designate the trench as its destination per A10.51). I must admit, I find this rather odd. -- jim

I always thought it odd that a rubble hex is not valid either. If I were panicing I would rather be behind stone rubble than in the woods, especially some rinky dink one-hex grove.

I too have found it odd that trenches, gullies and such are not rout/rally terrain. But then again I've never spent a day in uniform--much less in combat.
