The action for 2011 has started. Twenty-two souls have convened here in Champaign for the 13th running of the event (my 10th as host). Here are the first-round match-ups, keeping in mind that players may play anyone in the room in Round One; pairings after Round One are determined by record and seeding:

Larry Zoet v Jim Taylor
Jeff DeYoung v Dave Ginnard
Kevin Graves v Bryan Wills
Richard Salisbury v Curtis Brooks
Randy Yeates v Wes Vaughn
Rob Linxweiler v Doug Bennett
David Goldman v Doug Kirk
Peter Ward v John Pires
Don Holland v Steve Rogers
Matt Book v Scott Cochran
Jeff Thompson v Chris Scott

The Top Three seeds, based on their 2010 performance, are:

#1: Kevin Graves
#2: Doug Kirk
#3: Jim Taylor

More to come as I am able to log-in and report.

Did Graves win Winter War in 2010 or is that a homer seed?
Bob Holmstrom won in 2010, but work kept him from attending. Kevin finished second, Doug finished third, and Jim took fourth, so all bumped up a spot (as did everyone else who is back for 2011).

I only side with Kevin in matters involving Platoon Movement.

First result is in ...

Jim Taylor has begun his march toward a possible third ASL at Winter War championship (and fourth straight championship match) with a win over Larry Zoet in "Chopped Off At The Knees". Jim had the Vichy French (Algerians) and Larry the Amis.

Doug Kirk (Amis) has defeated Dave Goldman (Algerians) in "Chopped Off At The Knees".

Doug will take on Kevin Graves if Kevin wins his match, or Jim Taylor if Kevin should lose his match.

Steve,

I'll probably only report on very few individual matches, as there isn't always time to do so. But, stay tuned for the Round 2 pairings ...

Round Two begins in about 30 minutes; the first time the Saturday action has started at 9AM (let's see how folks like the extra hour of sleep) ...

Kevin Graves (1-0) v Doug Kirk (1-0)
Jim Taylor (1-0) v Don Holland (1-0)
Randy Yeates (1-0) v John Pires (1-0)
Curtis Brooks (1-0) v Dave Ginnard (1-0)
Doug Bennett (1-0) v Scott Cochran (1-0)
Chris Scott (1-0) v Matt Book (0-1) ... as the #4 seed, Matt's the highest-seeded 0-1 player
Wes Waughn (0-1) v Dave Goldman (0-1)
Peter Ward (0-1) v Larry Zoet (0-1)
Jeff DeYoung (0-1) v John Rockwell (0-0)
Rich Salisbury (0-1) v Steve Rogers (0-1)

As of this posting, Bryan Wills (0-1), Jeff Thompson (0-1), and Rob Linxweiler (0-1) have opted for some of the other gaming choices on the weekend here at the Con.

ROAR results for all Round 1 scenarios have been entered (I love being able to do this as we go along ... should have brought the wireless card with me last year!)

Round 3 is now underway. The usual suspects, Jim Taylor, Doug Kirk, and John Pires, are still stalking the championship beer stein. The pairings ...

Jim Taylor (2-0) v Doug Kirk (2-0)
John Pires (2-0) v Curtis Brooks (2-0)
Doug Bennett (2-0) v Chris Scott (2-0)
Don Holland (1-1) v Randy Yeates (1-1)
Dave Ginnard (1-1) v Kevin Graves (1-1)
Wes Vaughn (1-1) v Larry Zoet (1-1)
Jeff DeYoung (1-1) v Steve Rogers (1-1)
Scott Cochran (1-1) v Dave Goldman (0-2)
Matt Book (0-2) v Peter Ward (0-2)
John Rockwell (0-1) v Rich Salisbury (0-2)

We will have three undefeated players at the end of this round. The third-ranked undefeated player will be required to play the highest-ranked 2-1 player (whom he hasn't already played) in Round 4. It may be possible that the eventual champion, for the first time in the history of ASL at Winter War, will have one loss.

Round 2 results have been posted to ROAR.

French Toast And Bacon (FTAB) was the most popular choice (seven games), with The Riley Shuffle the only other scenario played (three games). In the seven years that Kevin's been doing the list, FTAB is the single most-played scenario of any from any list in any year. Just looking at the scenario card, myself, I would have chosen it if I were playing.

Heh! Kind of... I'm clipping counters, setting up games, and trying to improve my game. I'd forgetten how awesome the level of play is out in the world. Maybe next year I'll try again. ;-)

Round 4 ... there is still a possibility of a 4-0 vs 4-0 final ... but the competition has been fierce to this point, so we still don't know. But here are the pairings for Round 4 (not all W-L records are listed):

Jim Taylor (3-0) vs John Pires (3-0) ... a battle of two past champions for a shot at the beer stein
Chris Scott (3-0) vs Randy Yeates (2-1) ... a pair of Iowa boys looking to win their first championship
Curtis Brooks (2-1) vs Doug Bennett (2-1)
Dave Ginnard (2-1) vs Steve Rogers (2-1)
Doug Kirk (2-1) vs Wes Vaughn (2-1)
Scott Cochran (2-1) vs Peter Ward (1-2)
Larry Zoet (1-2) vs Don Holland (1-2)
Kevin Graves (1-2) vs Jeff DeYoung (1-2) ... playing "Speed ASL"
Rich Salisbury (1-2) vs Dave Goldman (0-3)
Matt Book (0-3) vs John Rockwell (0-2)

Excellent job Brian, wish I was there but I gotta limit the number of tournys I go, they can get expensive, unless your a lawyer of course. This year is the ASL Open, so next year will be WW.

The final day of ASL at Winter War is, for me, always bitter-sweet. Much as I enjoy hosting, and as much as I really don't mind the number-crunching (it's what I do for a living), it's a bit of a downer when you start seeing everyone leave as each match finishes ... knowing that I most likely won't see the folks I get along with the best for another year.

However, we gotta keep on keepin' on ... so here are the standings of the Top Eight heading into today's final round with the player's maximum possible total points if they win their match and earn the maximum bonus points from the other players in the field:

1. Jim Taylor (4-0, 48 pts) ... win and possible 65 pts in total
2. Randy Yeates (3-1, 37 pts) ... win and possible 54 pts in total
3. John Pires (3-1, 36 pts) ... win and possible 52 pts in total
4. Wes Vaughn (3-1, 35 pts, #5 seed) ... win and possible 51 pts in total
5. Doug Bennett (3-1, 35 pts, #12 seed) ... win and possible 51 pts in total
6. Steve Rogers (3-1, 34 pts, #22 seed) ... win and possible 50 pts in total
7. Chris Scott (3-1, 34 pts, #24 seed) ... win and possible 50 pts in total
8. Scott Cochran (3-1, 33 pts) ... win and possible 49 pts in total

The scheduled match-ups, subject to early departures and/or drop-outs, are:

Taylor v Yeates
Pires v Vaughn
Bennett v Rogers
Scott v Cochran
Kirk v Brooks
Ginnard v Zoet
Graves v Holland
Goldman v Rockwell
Book v Salisbury
DeYoung v Ward

Looking forward to tomorrow's action ... good night everyone!

I want to thank Brien and the Guys for an enjoyable day Saturday. I stopped in to see what the tournament was like. It was competitive, but fun spirited and a good time.
I was able to play a pickup scenario with Joe (Hi Joe), and see enough to know that I'm putting this one on my calendar for next year.
