Has anyone ever thought about changing the name of the ASL module for VASSAL?

It is ironic to me the the first VASSAL module somehow came to be called VASL.

Subsequently, we have been stuck having communication issues whenever VASSAL and VASL are mentioned in the same conversation. I have looked at other modules; I never saw a game with a "V" at the front of its module name.

One easy fix that I practice: I always say "Virtual ASL" instead of VASL.

I wonder though, could the module be renamed to ASL or Advanced_Squad_Leader?

Thoughts?

Just think of all those poor souls who don't like ASL but have to fire up the original Virtual Advanced Squad Leader software to play their other board games.

There is supposedly a significant shift/improvement in function coming with VASSAL 4 so maybe they would want to alter that name a little to distinguish it. Advanced Vassal somehow abbreviated to Aardvark perhaps.

Is VASSAL an acronym?
If so, what does it mean?
In the beginning, there was no VASSAL + VASL module, but a single VASL app and no additional module.
I don't seem to have seen people confused by the difference between VASSAL and VASL, but the latter could indeed just be named ASL.

In the beginning there was only "Virtual Advanced Squad Leader". VASSAL is not an acronym for anything that I am aware of but it had to differentiate itself by title when it became an application or platform in its own right, separate from the now VASL module. I like the history of VASL and the name has meaning, whereas VASSAL does not. Dropping the capitalization to Vassal would be a start. Also we will see what happens with any progress that may happen on Android devices. I would not be surprised if the platform name shifts first.

Better ASL or Virtual ASL instead of VASL, sometimes confusing in discussions!

I don't seem to understand the problem.

At least I have never had (or encountered) issues with differentiating ASL from VASL (even without speaking or spelling out "Virtual ASL").

Keep things as they are rather than creating confusion with renaming anything.
The ASL community has no problems dealing with BV, AoO, RS, CdG, HL, DB4, VotG, etc. pp.
So it should be able to cope with ASL & VASL as is.

Just my 2 cents.

If VASSAL was to be re-marketed I'd choose something like Leigon. A play on vassal/leige and "we are many".

It sounds the same, as the second "a" of VASSAL is hardly pronounced: VASS(e)L...
I personal spell VASL rather than pronounce it : vee-ay-ess-ell ; but pronounce VASSAL as the word "vassal"... But that is just me.

mispronunciation.
Vassal vassel.
Pronounce Vasl as V a Z L
This is my common experience too.

Note that with the addition of trains to ASL and zug being possibly translated as train in German, then Advanced Zug Leader may be appropriate.

Hmm...

When I speak out VASSAL and VASL, it sounds differently.

My German accent? ;)

Indeed, the single German S in VASL almost buzzes. The fun I have teaching my English friends how to pronounce the island called Sylt ;)

My hillbilly speech pronounces VASL and VASSAL identically. Since VASL was here first it seems reasonable that VASSAL rename itself to something else :- ).
