Retain VASL Window Position

I mentioned this on discord and was advised to post here aswell.

I play 'uncombined window' over two monitors.

VASL will not open into the position it was last open in.

This necessitates 20 seconds of rearranging the windows into my preferred position.

Now I know this is the classic first world problem but I think this the only windows program I have that doesn't remember it's place.

I've followed the generic windows guidance but to no avail.

Anyone any idea?

EDIT to ADD: My file is found in %USERNAME%/AppData/Roaming/VASL/prefs. The file is called VASL. It is a text file that can be edited with notepad. You should be able to find both your username and password for VASL in this file in plaintext. If you ever forget your password, now you know where to look. -- jim

I've whined about this in an earlier thread. IIRC, the issue many be in VASSAL, not in VASL itself...?

I don't know anything about this one way or another.

Did a quick search in the VASSAL forums today. Last mention I could see was dated 2011 and provided no answer one way or another. I have asked a question on VASSAL and will see what response I get.

All I can tell you is I don't use an integrated window and I have the settings I outline above. My windows always open up in the same Location. I suspect there is something else in my settings I cannot put my finger on as resizing or moving the separate windows to new locations persists from session to session. I am willing to send them to you @DougRim if you want to take a look at them to see what I might be missing. -- jim

Closing the loop on this. Thanks to Jim for his helpful post and thanks to @uckelman for his response to my request over on VASSAL.

There are two VASSAL preferences that matter here. The first is "Use Combined Window application". If you have this checked then everything appears in a fixed position at start. Although you can adjust the size of the map window during play it reverts to the standard size at start up.

So, to change the size of your windows and have those changes persists, you must uncheck this preference.

Secondly, there is a preference called "Remember main window size between sessions". If you have this checked then the main window (the one with the map!) will restart in the same position each time (so long as the "Combined Window" preference is unchecked.

Uncheck "Combined Window".
Check "Remember main window size".

This is consistent with Jim's list of preferences from his post.

Are we good on this? Is any one (@ibncalb, @GeorgeBates) still having issues?

I am good on the second preferences setting, but am not seeing the first, "Combined window?" Is this only featured in later VASSAL versions?

I think the combined window preference is in each module, e.g. VASL.

@GeorgeBates Sorry I was a bit unclear.

When I referred to "VASSAL preferences" I meant preferences that show up in the General tab under Preferences when the VASL module is loaded in VASSAL as per Scott's post. What you pictured are the VASSAL preferences as viewed from the VASSAL window with no module loaded.

I can see why you went there. What I actually was trying to point to was what Scott showed.

But it sounds like you are still having problems. Can you find your VASSAL preferences file, such as the one @Sparafucil3 showed. If you are on Windows it will be in a directory something like:

C:\Users\YourComputerName\AppData\Roaming\VASSAL\prefs\VASL, where "YourComputerName" is what you called it when setting it up.

The VASL file is just a plain text file. Double-click to open it.

Copy and paste here the lines at the top that look like this as per @Sparafucil3's post:

I would suggest updating to VASSAL3.7.8 and VASSAL6.6.7 and seeing what happens then.

I am indeed a late adopter, postponing upgrades until I gauge community reaction to the latest version. I updated to 6.6.4 due to general user acclaim and perceived relatively small number of reported bugs. Reactions to versions since then have kept me from switching horses. Not sure if any other users behave this way, but as long as the current version is stable it seems better to hold out for strongly favorable word of mouth on a new release.
Call me a Luddite. Looking forward to good news from v6.6.8.
