I quite like the either or game but it's structure usually only allows for one response before the game moves on. I like seeing multiple opinions hence this poll. Besides I haven't done one in a while. Btw my polls usually have some flaws and I have been effing up big time lately so apologies in advance for any shortcomings in this poll.

This came up in a conversation with Colonel Cuervo the other day.
Would you rather have an ASL 7-4-7 with all it's capabilities or a SL 8-4-7 with it's superior firepower but less flexibility?

People would bemoan the Finnish 8-3-8 Sissi MMC almost as much an American 8-4-7.
I prefer the 7-4-7 since it does reflect American firepower values better (M1 carbines and Thompsons for close range work).

I presume you meant 7-4-7. The "issue" with the Finn counter is it can self rally, self deploy, doesn't cower, has assault fire, etc. If you can turn it on in VASL, then it almost certainly applies to a First line or better Finnish MMC. There is nothing any nationality can do that a Finnish MMC can't do better. Had they been at Stalingrad, Stalingrad would have fallen in an afternoon. :) -- jim

I would argue it encourages intelligent play ;) -- jim
Must be why I favor the 8-4-7, brute
force vs racking the old brainpan.

The 7-4-7 is obviously the more versatile unit but the 8-4-7 has it's benefits also. Four FP out to eight hexes, badass in CC , sixteen FP from two squads. Brute force vs finesse, each has it's place.

Thanks for all the responses!

I would think that combination, M1 and Thompson or grease gun should give the 7-4-7 at least as much firepower as a German 8-3-8. I dont have any facts to support that, just relying on the increased firepower of the M1.

I checked out the Battle Order website for the weapons carried by a US paratrooper squad.
9 M1 rifles
2 M1A1 carbines
M1919 A6 machine gun
M1918 BAR
Didn't see any SMG listed which is quite surprising. I forgot to check what year this was for. More on that later.

I wonder if the absence of SMGs was why the 8-4-7 was replaced by 7-4-7s.

This was December 1944.
The carbines were carried by the gunner and assistant gunner.

I haven't found anything yet about German assault engineer squads.

While looking up this stuff I found a graphic that showed a late war Marine Raider squad's weapons. They had at least five SMG for a nine or ten man squad. That's some firepower.

I can't find the graphic now to be more specific but it was very impressive!
