Hello. Setting up J209 from the recent Journal, and looking at the notes for the 57L AT gun I realized there is a D4 sup
{J4+E}, signifying APDS availability in Europe from June 1944. However, why isn't it indicated simply by D4 sup{J4E}? Does the "+" signify anything? Note that for HE it is noted as HE7 sup{J4E}.

The chapter H note is the rule.
The marking on the counter is not - and no "+" is trivial, as the chapter H note is clear.
What do you not understand of the rule?

I think it indicates "and later" to prevent people from thinking it's only available June -December 1944. Consider the 76L AT Gun (US ON 8). It has "A4^4/5^5". That is A4 in 1944, and A5 in 1945. If it just was "A4^4" that would be A4 only in 1944. If they wanted to do it in the same style as the 76L's APCR, it would have to be "D4^J4E/4^5E" which is more awkward.

This, from (the kinda better) British Ordnance Note 6 (page H74), e.g., makes the global schema pretty clear:

About the only thing not explicitly on the counter above is the PTO bump, but if you habitually read all your relevant Chap H notes that's easy to know.

[It's too bad that the US note is not quite as clear as is the British note in comparison.]
