Scenario 236 In Rommel's Wake has the following VC:
"... the Germans win at the end of any Game Turn by having >=12 VP (calculated as Exit VP) [EXC...] south of the river..."

Does an unarmed unit (escaped prisoners, swimmers emerging from the water) count for Exit VP?

I thought so, but my opponent disagreed. It didn't matter in the end, because I failed every TC to jump into the water.

Never test the water with a toe or ease into the water. Just jump in and enjoy the refreshing splash.

That's not how I learned it in my lifeguarding course!

Played a game against Curtis Brooks a few years back & he failed every attempt to swim (6 all told) and this was with SS guys for Pete's sake. All he had to do was get two MMC across a narrow river (bd40 perhaps?). Always fun when you have to pull something out of your hat to try and win.

Swimming is optional. I can only assume you both agreed to it prior to the start of the scenario?

just sayin'

😜
The conversation went something like this:
Me: "Can we play with the swimming rules?"
My opponent: "No problem. Your unarmed units don't give you VP anyways."
Me: "I think they do."
MO: "I think they don't."
Me: "Let's just play and worry about that once it becomes relevant." - which it didn't.

Heck, if anyone asked me if Swimming would be ok, I'd let him. It is a fun thing and if he thought of some unlikely ways to pull things off, I believe this outside the box thinking should be encouraged.

Very few optional rules we normally play without unless specifically noted as requiring an SSR (e.g. Civilian Interrogation). POW interrogation is a gimmie and even lost a tournament game where my win would have put me into at least the running when my opponent used it to reveal a critical unit (SP43 Deadeye Smoyer) without even batting an eyelash (well, perhaps when a 'scriptie kept his mouth shut and a leader piped up like a song bird). I believe use of these "special" rules just add more spice to a game and having fun with a game is more important than the eventual outcome. For me at least with so many games under my belt, the trip is as important as the destination and if I learn (re-learn) a few things along the way, so much the better. About the only "special" rules we hash out prior to a game is the optional armament of vehicles if the date permits and the use of gyros and Sz as optional, though in tournaments I try to remember to ask what optional rules they use and don't expect to use them myself if not previously agreed upon.

Kind of off topic, but are there any scenarios that pretty much require swimming as a requirement either to meeting VCs or strategically?

We just played the return match. A lonely, exposed French MMG squad with 8-1 leader single-handedly won the scenario by rolling a 2 on a 6-4 shot against a stack of 3 bicycles and then a 3 on a 2-4 shot against another stack. I didn't manage to blow up any bridge, though, but it wasn't necessary.

BoF22 Capital Punishment - perhaps not required - but you will probably do it anyway,
