"Veteran of a 1,000 Psychic Wars"- Blue Oyster Cult
You got Aces High...but forgot
"The Trooper"- Iron Maiden (The charge of the Light Brigade man!)
"All along the Watchtower"- Jimi Hendrix (Supposedly composed when he was in 'Nam for that short time that he was there)
I'll think of more...

oh man! you are right! "The Trooper" rawks more than "Aces High," too! (We get so close near enough to fight! When a Russian gets me in his sights! He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow. A burst of rounds take my horse below!)

Wasn't "All Along the Watchtower" written by Bob Dylan? or I recall Dylan covering the song.

"All Along the Watchtower" was a Dylan originally, I believe.

Most war related songs I really like are actually in fact antiwar.

To pick one, I think I'd have to say "Paint It Black" by the Stones.

After "Ballad of the Green Berets" knocked the Stones off the top 10,It's rumoured that Mick Jagger commented on what war-mongerers americans were.

How about: Dixie! :thumb:

Also, most of the songs I like are country so that's what I'll have to put down:

"Hello Vietnam"- From the beginning of Full Metal Jacket, I have it on CD but don't know the artist

"Private Wilson White"- Marty Robins

"Ballad of the Green Berets"- Sgt. Barry Sadler

"Old Gray Coat"- Trace Adkins (Its on a CD I have called Civil War)

"Don't Give Us a Reason"- Hank Williams, Jr. (made about Desert Storm)

"Letters from Home"- John Michael Montgomery (currently rising to the top of the charts)

"Still in Saigon"- Charlie Daniels Band

"PT 109"- Jimmy Dean

"Smoke on the Water"- Not the Deep Purple version, there's an old WWII song that bears no resemblance

Pretty much every Johnny Horton Song- "Battle of New Orleans", "Sink the Bismark", "The Battle of Bull Run", "The Sinking of the Reuben James", etc.

That's just a few that I can think of right now. On my all my burnt CDs I have at least one war song.

Right "Hello Vietnam" song was used quite well in FMJ!

I recall hearing an old Woody Guthrie song about the Rueben James ("Tell me what were there names, tell me what were there names. Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James?"). Is this a cover of the J. Horton song?

btw...my bud made me a cd of the Hayseed Dixies. They are a dixie band covering AC/DC songs (note the band title!)! Great stuff! check it out.

You MUST listen to "Johnny come Lately" by Steve Earle, on the Copperhead road album. Has Pogues doing back up instumentals.

Sample lyric " My P-47 is a mighty good ship, took a round coming cross the channel last trip" Come on the song even talks about the thunderbolt as opposed to the Mustang, way cool!

Also Green Fields of France, about WW1 and its costs..this was on the album "Danny Boy" by John Mcdermott[ includes Walzting Matilda btw], also "The Men They Couldnt Hang " do a punkier version, but I can t remember the album.

Finally "Barrets Privateers" by Mcginty, a canadian band this song about a 1812 "commerce raider" is a good drinking or shower song! Sample lyrics " Goddam them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold" [yes yes it goes all horribly wrong..]

Mars:Bringer of War-Gustav Holst. Really good! Notice that much of the early Star Wars music has strong similarities (pays homage) to Mars:Bringer of War, and the rest of the set, Planets? Or, is it only me, that sees it?

There is also:
Starship Trooper by Yes

Yeah, I've heard the Woody Guthrie version, as well as the Kingston Trio version (seemed to be a popular song in the late 50s). To be honest I don't know, Woody could have written the song, but I know Johnny made it a Top 10 hit first. And I've heard the Hayseed Dixie CDs. They're great! They also have several others, though I can't remember what other rock bands they do.

How could I forget those! I love Johnny Reb and Commanche is a very moving song. Always have to remember there was one American survivor of the Little Big Horn! :thumb: And you putting Scotland the Brave up there reminded me of a song called "Roddy McCorley". Its an old Irish song about fighting the English.

Yeah Basil Paledouris is great with the Hunt for Red October Theme. He also did the "Intruder March" from the movie Flight Of The Intruder.

The same Al Stewart that wrote "year of the cat?" amazing!!
Yup. He has an album called Past, Present and Future that has a lot of songs with a historical theme including Old Admirals which is about Admiral Sir Jackie Fisher.

Cheers!
