I've just day 2 of Red Army Day CG.
The Stukas hammered me on day one. Are they too cheap at a cost of 2?
Any other thoughts on this CG?

There's a strategy guide for the Russian in VFTT90 by...ehr...me. It doesn't really address the question of Stuka's though. One of the problems of buying Russian fighters is that you buy before the weather roll, so unless you pay 3pts for the weather report your purchase could be wasted. On the first date though, the germans have only 9cpp so probably won't buy stuka's and escort and the weather is automatically clear so it can be worth it - though still expensive for the russians.

I'm surprised that the Stukas are uber-effective though as they don't arrive straight off and are only available for a limited period unless you pay for extra fuel. (No module handy so this from memory)

I can only suggest HMG's for AAA (all you will get) and stick tanks in single hex buildings (as no cellars). With only four dates you can't wait for bad weather though - to get 30 blocks you have to push pretty hard.

Hi

I'm in the process of playing this with my regular opponent, near the end of the first CG day (on turn 5) and i am playing the Germans. With the 9 CPP's i bought an increase in SAN up to 5, additional fortification points (mainly ?), OBA and Drop Cannisters. On reflection I wish i bought more cannisters as i'm having a nightmare with my SW freezing up due to the reduced breakdowns. My opponent went for more infantry companies to bolster Yellow, Blue and Red Sector and bought a couple of OBA's - Katuskya's and 80mm Battalion mortars.

I list below brief details on my setup.

I deployed all my 'walking wounded' onto the 'Handelskurven' as the russians have very limited options here and its important for german to have MMC's in this sector in the post game phases. I also came to the conclusion that having these walking wounded in the front lines is a possible liability (low MP and +1 mods on CC and slow movement due to deep snow).

I used both of my Alarmheiten counters and used all my 5-4-8's and a few SW together with a couple 9-1 and 8-1 ldr's. The rationale here is that the germans initially dont know the exact point where the russkies are going to attack and the germans have to initially defend a long perimeter. The alarmheiten counters are really useful and can potentially put a good dent in the russians plans if used correctly.

For the rest of my initial set up, i mixed the troops types and deployed c20% of remaining forces in West Sector, 20% North (above Policemens Gully), 20% in South sector and the remaining 40% within 10 hexes North and South of GPU prison. Oh nearly forgot, one of my OBAO in the Judentemple steeple and the other near the airfield on west sector (just in case russians dashed for the sole stone building that commands the airfield).

I set up one Pak 36 in the South sector and the other 2 Paks in or around GPU prison. In hindsight, i should have had one of them setup in the North sector.

The only thing i'm not sure on when a CG scenario finishes is the setup for the next CG. Am i right in saying that the Germans can setup anywhere on the map (east/west) within their drawn perimeters ie troops deployed in say south sector could setup in west sector next cg game? And as for the russians it appears that their armor withdraws off the map within its current 'colored' sector and re-enters next cg in same colored sector albeit anywhere along the length of sector. What about the russian infantry? do they have to redeploy in same colored sectors amongst captured blocks? and/or possibly re-enter map in same sector color but along map edge?

Yes, that is correct. So long as that German unit is not isolated itself..ie it has a pathway to the overall German perimeter. If it is say totally surrounded within Block say 7 with Russian having control of all hexes around it, then no. But if you just mean generally, yes.

And as for the russians it appears that their armor withdraws off the map within its current 'colored' sector and re-enters next cg in same colored sector albeit anywhere along the length of sector.

Correct. (But remember “sectors” are terms for Cholm itself, and “Quadrants” are terms for the colored edges, which apply to the Russians) if the exited along Red Quadrant, they enter along Red, even if Red is now part of a much larger perimeter.

What about the russian infantry? do they have to redeploy in same colored sectors amongst captured blocks?

If you have not linked Red to Blue, then units say in the Red Quadrant perimeter can only redeploy within Red, but they can move from blocks they control therein or partially control therein to other areas of the Red perimeter.

and/or possibly re-enter map in same sector color but along map edge?

If they were forced to Rout Off Map (KGS4.51) they re-enter, if they survived, along the same Quadrant they exited—Red say.

Also remember the Russians cannot form / link perimeters across cliffs...see 11.6054

Thanks Justiciar

When i wrote sector i meant Quadrant :)

I've got to say i love the maps/game and am really impressed with the snow look. Off the back of buying this module i bought and read Jason Marks book on Cholm. After reading this it does get you really into the mood.

One thing i note from reading the book and surprised me was the amount of russian artillery firing and the the consistency of it.

Is there anything more in the pipeline with regards to cholm i.e future CG or scenarios?

I am glad you feel after reading "Besieged" that KGS captured the feel of the battle. That was one of my objectives all along.

I have several follow on scenarios already designed (some set during the siege, and so after about the 'recapture' of the rest of the town from the Russians), but all needing more PT (Bueller?, Bueller...anyone...). There are no plans for another CG. The above noted scenarios will be part of a "KGS Player's Guide", several folks here on GS have written articles and the like for it. But until the scenarios are set to go, the whole remains unreleased.

Steeple heights

Is my thinking correct, that the height of the steeple in CC30 ( Judentempel ) is level 1 only, & height of steeple in PP15 is level 2.
