Saying hello here as this is considered polite I suspect.

Not new, at all. Not new to Squad Leader, nor ASL. Not new to wargaming as a whole. Not even new to this forum. Was active when the Armchair General site was still alive. Was active on just about all the wargame forums when they were big back in 2005. But the past is dead, and sadly, I keep seeing names I knew have also died. Devs, and just ordinary blokes. Guys I liked and guys I hated. Jeeze I feel old saying all that.

I'm still pushing cardboard around. Haven't really gotten to prefer digital over cardboard.
I'd like to say I'm famous, but, well, life happens. And I suspect a lot of you won't even remember 2000-2005 much.
And I don't recall it much either.

Why did I come here? Good question. I guess because I still play Squad Leader. And this is the only place on the internet to discuss Squad Leader. And yes, I've looked. This is it. Stupid Groups on Facebook don't cut it. And I don't like Consim.

What do I expect to get out of membership? Hmm what's even available I don't already have?
Been a while since I got anything from MMP. But when I went to Retro Squad Leader, a lot of the new stuff just didn't matter as much. After 50 boards, how many can I need? 75% of the vehicles are just to use up RAACOs.
I'd buy it all again if I won the lottery I suppose :)

Welcome here.
I hope that you will find good resources and have nice interactions with SL players.
The most active forum here is about ASL.
I believe that boardgamegeek has a forum devoted to SL too.

Thanks Robin. Yeah, this site would likely not exist if not for the ASL crowd. BGG is ok as a data base, but the guys there lack grace.

Would you be interested in jumping into the ASL rabbit hole?
The Starter Kits allow to play a (cheap) simplified version of ASL, giving an experience comparable to the SL one - with improved rules for defensive fire during a opponent's MPh.
It would open to you a large community of players.
Just a suggestion.

Hey, we lack grace, too! At least I daresay, that since 2005 not only the experience but also the girth of many has broadened... ;)

As you probably like to reminisce, how about this...

I have Starter kit 1. I have pondered going the SK route as a minimalist route. I have to laugh though recalling the arrival of Starter Kit 1 and how all the die hards bought all the bloody stock out from under the intended target market more than once hehe.

But as I have mentioned, perhaps only on my profile I suppose thus far (you might not have that yet), I have gone to employing Retro Squad Leader (nice concept actually) that brutally (maybe I'm being harsh there), trims back the game's rules design. I have a massive dose of Squad Leader era counters as well as images of ASL counters, which I am musing over using, or not. Sadly I have no Italians it seems. But the thing is, how much do I require all of the data on an ASL counter. Not fond of ASL in the desert, so the Italians might be a loss I can manage.

Been also considering cherry picking some ASL rules elements to sneak into my Retro exerience.
And then there is the simple truth, how much does a person NEED all those damned vehicles? ASL has quite the wealth of pointless vehicles.I simply don't need a Sturm Tiger. Although yes, I have it in 2 scales as a model around my apartment :)

I recently got interested in some great rules designs for miniatures actually. And have been pondering 72nd scale Squad Leader. Or using Squad Leader counters increased in size to maybe 2 inch size as minis effectively speaking. I won't need eeeevery danged counter that way of course.

Alas my main burden, is lack of mobility. I am stuck in small town Ontario Canada, with no vehicle and there is no decent transit out of town. I have never been to a concert, let alone a wargame convention. I went to Anime North in Toronto a couple of times with some friends back in the 2005 time period. What a geekfest :) But I know no one that would want to go watch old buggers push cardboard for a weekend. I managed to get inside the ASL Annual (the first one). Details are no longer current though. And it isn't the 80s anymore either. I even tried to grow my own wargamer back in 95. Darn kid decided to be a Tolkien nut instead.

Not a fan of VASL, or some of you would have already played against me. I spend too much time staring at this monitor already. I want to push cardboard not pixels. And share a beer with my opponent and catch him staring down my top :) Wish I could get someone from Toronto area willing to drive here on a weekend. Dinner is home made and the beer is free. Plus, how often do you get to suffer great Squad Leader smack talk from a lady :)

You could check out the Canadian ASL Organization. There was a thread here a couple weeks ago about it.

Dinner and beer? Wow!

I was generally happy if my face to face opponents took a shower beforehand.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Just wrote this to another guy who turned up here after a long hiatus:

If you have difficulties finding opponents, check out VASL and VASSAL

Basically, this is an excellent way to play via the net and allows you to find opponents to play around the world (for which this forum is a good way to make contacts). If you use a service such as Skype or Discord for voice during play, then you are set.

The great thing about VASL is, that you will have access to all game pieces and boards. You merely need the rules, an oppenent, and scenarios (which maybe your opponent can also provide).

Of course, this applies to ASL and Starter Kit. I don't know if there is an SL module for VASSAL, and naturally the SL counters are different then those for ASL & SK.
