SR on board in LOS of observer and in owning side's Def Fire Phase the radio malfunctions.

What happens to the SR?

After looking at the flow chart and C1 we think it just stays there. Forever?

We are in turn 3 of the 21 turn long Last Bid from RB, so if it stays it could be there a very long time!

Yes, the SR remains in place even if you repair the radio and do not roll for contact again until much later. If your radio is disabled it's just as well you remove it from play as it will have no further effect on the game anyway [EXC: in some special circumstances noted by SSR, other radios are authorized to call for fire from multiple OBA modules].

OK, thanks, that's what we had concluded but thought we might have missed something.

What happens if the radio malfs (or the leader breaks) after the FFE:1 comes down? I read the rules as saying that the FFE:2 comes in, regardless:

C1.22: The involuntary loss of Contact does not automatically cause loss of Battery Access, but failure to regain Contact in the next friendly PFPh/DFPh (whichever comes first) will prevent the Conversion, Correction, and voluntary Cancellation of that battery's onboard SR/FFE counter; the FFE would continue to be resolved as per 1.5-.51, and, if still existing at the end of the RPh in which it is a FFE:C, would at that time be Cancelled (l.34); a SR would remain in place.

but I've never been entirely sure that's right. Is it?

In as much as an FFE1 is immediately flipped to its FFE2 after resolution (actually it's only on board for a very short time, between the time the SR/AR is converted and the end of its 1st Fire Phase), the FFE2 is actually on board at the time the Radio Malfunctions or the FO breaks. Following the action of C1.22 the FFE2 would be resolved in the next Fire Phase regardless and removed as indicated.
