There was a story in the paper a couple of years ago about how a DC city official and their manager refused to recognize a marriage certificate from New Mexico because it was from a "foreign country."

West Virginia has been a state since 1863. I cannot tell you how many times people outside my state are surprised, even outright shocked, when I relate this fact. There are even car window stickers for sale here explaining this, with the caption "Buy a history book. Read it."
