GIF's, PNG & Transparency

The mod size take a hit, that coupled with my insistence on 32bit png files to keep fading alpha channel effects intact (the 8/16 bit gifs seem to always discard a gradual bevel or emboss fade and display either one end of the result or another)
The reason for this is that GIF's only support 1 bit of transparency. A Pixel is either completely transparent, or completely opaque, nothing in between.

PNG's support transparency properly, pixels can be partially transparent.

My standard procedure to minimize a map for a module is to start with the best quality RGB you can get, then scale down to final size using best interpolation, then convert to either 96, 128 or 256 indexed colors, then save as a PNG. Counters usually look fine at 96 colors, some need 128.
