So is it a problem with indistiguishable level shading, or with the position of the crest lines within the hexes? I thought it was the former, but it sounds like it might be the latter (or a combination of the two...)

It is a combination of the two. I have also had issues with some of the double-crest hexes and whether some of the hexes are jungle or Open Ground (e.g. jungle in hex but center dot in OG). Just another case of a nice looking map that does not conform to the ASL rulebook.
