My other hobby is to pick up £2 books from charity stores. I really don’t have another expensive hobby to compare ASL to.
I wish I could say the same. My other hobby has become astrophotography. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. But then I get these from my front yard.

Cool hobby Jim. Love your photos.

I have mainly appreciated the stars during the evenings in camp while backpacking in the Sierra Nevada.

I posted once that I'd rather play at street-fighting via ASL, rather than be involved in the real thing.
I believe a lot of other ASL players hold similar feelings.

I suppose it seems natural for the unititated to assume that waergamers are "pro-war" but in fact I've found that it's less likely to be the case, especially among wargamers who have studied their subject. Being interested in something doesn't mean you approve of it, any more than fans of Agatha Christie novels approve of murder. A few years ago on a Napoleonic wargaming forum someone asked the question, "If you could travel back in time and see a Napoleonic battle as it occurred, which one would it be and why?" I was surprised that several posters responded that they would not choose to do so, because if they saw the reality of a Napoleonic battle, they would probably give up the hobby.

"They're not even using precision dice! HEAVEN HELP US!"
Well, they didn't even have precision guns anyway - except the British rifles, which were used in special rifle units.

By the same token, discussions on this very forum revealed that when asked if they saw "little war movies in their head" when playing ASL, a number of respondents - including some very gifted players - said that they did not, including at least one that professed only to see numbers and probabilities - in essence, ASL was for him a mathematical exercise rather than a recreation of martial heroics.

Spending more time reading than playing is not necessarily a bad thing. I took my ASLRB to work and would read it during breaks. Fish and I played a lot but just reading and thinking about the game was also quite enjoyable.

With VASL and such things as the online tournaments the opportunities to play are there. Finding the time to participate may be another matter. The Forum is a great place to spend what spare time you have, very educational. Good luck and good gunnin to you.

By far the fastest and easiest way to learn is to play against an opponent who is ready to teach you.
This way, you automatically observe which rules of the game come up most often and are thus most important to someone who wants to learn. After the game, you can then read up the sections in the rules to have these sink in.

If you do not have a local opponent, you might want to try VASL. See here:

You need to install VASSAL and then the VASL module. VASL is basically a set of virtual boards and counters. The great thing is that you can find oppenents to play across the world and are not limited to face-to-face opponents. If you use Discord or some other service for voice while you play, is is almost as good as face-to-face play, in some regards even superior.

Another thing which might help you are countless videos on the net which provide either playthroughs of scenarios or explain several aspects of ASL. One point to start might be "Illuminating Rounds", see this thread here:

As for explanational videos, you might want to search youtube.

What I would not recommend to do:
Do not go back to ancient SL. ASL is much better. And it will be much more difficult to find opponents for SL compared to ASL. Tools for SL like VASL for ASL, the forum like this here do not exist for SL, so when going for SL, you will have much less community support of any kind.

If full ASL seems to great a challenge for the time you have at hand, you could try to begin with the ASL Starter Kit series, which were intentionally designed to introduce the basic concepts of Infantry, Guns, and Armor before moving on to full ASL. Meanwhile the Starter Kit series has evolved into a complete product line which could be tagged "ASL Lite". The good thing is that all Starter Kit rules (with very few exceptions) are completely compatible with ASL, in other words, the SK rules are also valid for ASL.

The Starter Kit series is also supported by VASL. Starter Kit 1 introducing the most basic rules has only 16 pages of them. A boxed set of physical components of SK 1 costs around 30 USD. Here's a link to the products.

If that weren't enough, the rules for SK can be freely downloaded from the MMP webpage (I believe covering SK1 through SK4) along with scenarios here:

Which means that in conjunction with VASL, you could start off at zero cost.

Hope this helps,
von Marwitz
