Hi Guys!

Well, will there ever be such a thing? Vietnam ASL?

I hope so, as it would be cool!

You see, I´m still young, 27, so, do I have a chance to see it in my lifetime? :smoke:

would be intersting.

Great War ASL (being worked on) and Even Russian civil War ASL would be excellent as well.

The playtest version is almost finished as part of the Modern-ASL project. The following modules are in playtest state now:

- MASL Core Rules (covering new vehicle rules, ATGMs, Air Support, Airmobile Operations,..)
- MASL Module: The Empire Strikes Back (Falklands 1982)
- MASL Module: Forgotten Heros (Vietnam 1963-75)

the following modules are currently in the works in different states of development:
- MASL Module: Flashpoint Germany (Cold War Germany 1989)
- MASL Module: Small Wars (Scenario/Action Pack w. Grenada, Somalia, ...)
- MASL Module: Arab-Israeli Wars (1956-82?)

Regards,

Frank

Actually...

I saw at ASLOK in 1996 some guys working on VIETNAM ASL with Helios and better airpower control and some other knick knacks.

But haven't heard squat about it since (helps I haven't gone to ASLOK since 1997 b/c of wife, kids, reality etc.)

ALSO the old OAF magazine made a SL scenario for VIETNAM using US 747s vs. 658s for the VC....but don't ask me where THAT is....it's from the 1980s

Although no Vietnam ASL, Critical Hit has produced Dien Ben Phu (as previosly mentioned), Genesis 48(Isreal conflict up to 1956), and is gearing up for Toktong Pass (Korea). Genesis is a great module, and DBP is good too.

Frank,

Will MASL add a third-party rules chapter to the existing ASLRB to accomodate all the changes and additions required to reflect a modern tactical environment?

Or will it be issuing its own MASLRB with all of its own self-contained rules?

Sounds very interesting, BTW.

There was a pretty intensive thread on this topic some time ago, I found the Link:

http://forums.gamesquad.com/advanced-squad-leader/27606-modern-asl.html

I'm not in favor of non-WWII era ASL, I'm not strongly against it (if done right & works then it might be good as a seperate game in its own right). I basically don't want to go into it (I did so in the above thread). In a nutshell, my reasoning is that MASL would need to be a totally different game with completely different squads, vehicles, aircraft+helos, map scale, rules (ATGMs, TOWs etc ... much more extensive), and balance issues (M1s vs T72s? .. that's akin to Tiger IIs vs T26s .. too lopsided).

Korea is very do-able. The reds all used WWII stuff (for which Russian ASL counters are fine) and the Western allies were using WWII surplus. Thios scenarios I've already played were OK. I think there's an HASL CG in Pork Chop Hill.

What would the FP of a squad armed with M16's and M203's be if using the 666 as the basic starting point? Not to mention the M60. Does the M60 have the FP of an MMG with the mobility of an LMG?

That will be Chapter X: MASL Core Rules. This rules chapter assumes the ASLRB and expands on all modern stuff like helicopter operations, air support, advanced armor, APCs, ATGMs, etc.

The single modules will contain the counters, scenarios and a rules chapter with theatre/time frame specific rules.

Critical Hit's 'Dien Bien Phu' module has been VASLized - http://forums.gamesquad.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1398
has the maps, overlays & DBP extension.

It uses ASL rules, but adds CH's 'Platoon Leader' rules for the CG. So, no helicopters or other modern weirdness - just standard ASL units, w/ some new stuff - M29 Weasel amphibious APCs that have an RCL that works as an AAMG, not an MA; and a nice 'Bangalore' SW for use against Wire.

The module has several intersting scenarios, and features a 'fight-to-the-finish' CG that promises nassty combat over bleek terrain. Think 'Red Barricades' and add Trench/Wire Networks, Hills, & Mud.
