W/r/t SSL certs for sites: There is no reason to pay for one these days. You can get free ones from LetsEncrypt. That's what we do for Vassal's site.

Hosting, on the other hand, is definitely not free.

We're not going to live forever. Perhaps we should set up some sort of foundation to fund VASSAL/VASL in perpetuity?

If an ASL player uses VASL to get the fix, then that ASL player should kick in at least a nominal sum on an annual basis. Most online experiences are inundated with ads and cookies. Avoiding the ads and the cookies ... that has serious value.
