Although I use plenty of special words on the 1 mile drive home from work. I dont know what is being taught in school these days but Driver's Education must not be on the curriculum. These college students are horrible, inconsiderate, inattentive drivers. Throw in cell phones and it's game over.

binnacle ? A box to place the ships compass. Sometimes they rolled with the ship. They kept a lid on in because they didn’t understand how it worked so not taking any chances they put it in a nice box to contain the demons or whatever made it function. Sometimes the nails in the box messed with the magnetism (they didn’t know) but at least the lid kept salt water and crap off the nice instrument.

Sailors are a superstitious lot. On the sub the XO posted an order that whistling was forbidden because of the " whistling up a storm " superstition sailors had. This was 1974 and we were 600 feet underwater.
For the next few days all you heard was whistling. Then the order was rescinded. Sailors are a cantankerous lot.
