Everyone of us knows this:
You may be a grizzled grognard or a novice newby - you come across something in ASL that you never knew, that never occured to you, that you never came across.

This thread is dedicated to those "What, really??"-moments.

You are invited to provide yours. Please add a rules reference for the edification of the readers.

And, unsurprisingly, I will present this first post on such a thing that I came across just this afternoon - having played ASL since the mid-90's...

Situation:
I had immoblized an enemy AFV by a combat result. Its crew had failed its Immobilization TC and Abandoned the vehicle and scurried away. As the scenario VC were about CVP, I wanted the Abandoned AFV destroyed. So I shot at it again and received a (Possible) Shock result.

Erm, what now? No Crew in the vehicle, so could it be Shocked at all?

Can't remember ever encountering this situation.

I never knew:
34692"C7.42 EFFECT: ... At the end of the next RPh the AFV must roll for recuperation (Δ), even if already Abandoned before being hit. ..."

So yes, you can Shock an AFV even if it has been previously Abandoned.

I was playing JR Tracy and doing rather well, my meatchopper (Wirbelwind) had his guys stymied and he made a ‘dash’ move to get into my defenses. I spun the turret and prepared for a nasty shot when JR pointed out ‘ya can’t spin a turret on a dash.’ This move was the momentum shifter for the game and JR infiltrated a platoon through the hole and rolled up the position for a back from disaster win.

Here is the rules quote to go with it:

"A4.63 Dash: ... A weapon with a specified CA may not fire on a Dashing unit in the road Location if it must change its CA to do so. ..."

I can't provide a specific example, though Gun Duels sort of rings the bell. Instead I will speak to the various emotions experienced when such a joyful event occurs. A mixture of WTF, GTFOOH, and then the realization of learning and getting something right. Great system!!

As I have said before you don't have to be playing the game to enjoy it. Playing does provide a different and quite good type of enjoyment.

A10.51 ...At the start of its RtPh, a routing unit must designate its destination and must attempt to reach it during that RtPh...

Hell, I just rout to my best leader regardless of where he is....I rally faster that way.

Here’s one I discovered playing Toby Pilling: if you call a FFE on your own troops their moral goes down one, everybody except the observer that is, last sentence. This saved my 8-0 leader w/radio from a NMC from my own artillery, I was pinned but didn’t break, one pip.

I broken leader who fails a morale check is not eliminated. Despite A10.2:
"For each leader eliminated (whether by breaking when already broken, a mortal wound, or any other cause)"
We'd played for years that this was the case. When people talking of wounded leaders I was thinking they'd been very unlucky with snipers.

Our opponent had that happen to him last night and we pointed out the rule to him.

Look, Mulligan! I don't think I'm getting through to you! You're dropping your damn barrage on our position! The reason you can't hear me is because you're firing your mortars at your end, and they're dropping here, on our end!

Most people will know this but one of the most hilarious rules which is sprung upon unsuspecting rookie bocage players...

When you're in TEM behind bocage (with WA) and you fire before instantly dropping wall advantage such that you cannot then be fired back at. I think this is a beauty as it completely flies in the face of a fundamental ASL tenet whereby if you can fire at, you can be fired at.

And also, mentioned recently in the bocage discussion - broken units lose wall advantage so it's really difficult to eliminate units who are defending behind bocage by massed firepower.
