After taking a break last week for West Coast Melee, Matt and I got together last night and got much of the Russian purchases and setup done. Still a bit more to complete...there is a LOT going into the Russian defenses and it is not a quick exercise.

The German team will be pulling counters and planning their opening attack next week. If all goes well, we will be kicking things off the week of the 11th.

The Russian setup is complete...complete-ish...some final tweaks today.

The German team is assembling this evening to do their setup. With any luck, we may actually start rolling dice this week.

I have reached out to Fen, and he is going to try to teach me how to post pictures on here. In the meantime, I might ask him to post a picture or two here for me. It is an impressive sight to see the entire map set up on the table.

This past Wednesday we kicked off the start of our Ponyri campaign. Matt and I are playing as the Russians, while Jim, Bryan, and Clubby are the Germans.

The Russian setup took an insane amount of time to set up, compounded with real-life obligations interfering with planned set up meetings and West Coast Melee...which resulted in a long delay to the start of our campaign.

German Turn 1

The German team decided to go with a "small" opening probe of just 3 companies entering, with limited StuG support of 6 StuGs, all along the West side. They announced that they were going to bring down a 150mm Rocket OBA module...red card...phew!!! Next, they announce the 150mm heavy OBA module...red card...thank you, Gods of Communism!!! They finally drew a black card on their Battalion Mortar OBA (80mm), which they used to drop smoke onto Z28 to blind the Level 2 building. (Everyone is using offboard observers, so no contact/maintenance rolls.)

In the movement phase, the mean Germans triple-teamed me (Matt was not feeling well and was not able to make it this week) and all three of them brought on attack groups. Bryan brought on a company in the area of A36-A31 (no StuGs)...Clubby's company with StuGs in the area of A26-A22...Jim's company and StuGs in the area of A18-A12. All of them moved East towards my long line of wire in the F hexrow (from F18-F39). I laid down multiple firelanes where I could, which were able to overlap and limit movement options in Bryan's area, but not so effective against Clubby...that is an understatement, as Clubby rolled snakes on an MC and got the daily double...and none were able to reach Jim's criminals. I broke one heavy MG. Clubby felt aggressive with his StuGs and ran one of them through the wire, but regained his caution and stopped when he found an AP mine in G24.

In Final Fire, I drew a black card for both of our OBA modules and got the SR's out onto the board in good areas with minimal drift. I took one or two shots, and broke one or two of Bryan's degenerates. The remainder of my Final Fire was ineffective.

German Advancing Fire was limited to mainly Jon taking acquisition shots with his StuGs and almost connecting on an Improbable Hit. The Germans advanced to form a line along the E hexrow.

Russian Turn 1

In the Rally Phase, I was able to repair the HMG ("Thank you, Saint Engels!"). I converted one of the OBA modules (80mm) and dropped it onto several of Bryan's broken units. Bryan rolled very well, I rolled not so great, but I was able to break a few more units in Bryan's area and reduced a broken squad to claim first blood and placed the first unit into the dirt cup.

I took a few Prep Fire shots, with little to no effect.

Movement Phase saw much skulking, especially in the village around the K26 intersection...let's call it San Bernardino ("The Dino").

In Defensive Fire, the Germans had apparently revised their attack plan and drew black cards for their OBA this time. They brought down the 150mm rockets first onto San Bernardino, with the drift placing it optimally into M27...and the heavy 150mm OBA dropped into their pre-reg hex in K25 accurately. The end result was the Russians left with just one good order unit remaining to defend San Bernardino, 2.5 squads killed, a destroyed Trench in K26, and all of the other Russian defenders in The Dino broken. They beat me down, took my lunch money, AND took my shoes as well...ouch.

It still took three German players to fight me. :p:rofl::LOL:

This past week we got in another full turn. Matt returned, but sadly, Jim let us know that it was likely his final time joining us...he is in the process of moving and will be busy with all of those arrangements. (I will post more about this in a separate post.)

German Turn 2

The German rocket OBA and heavy 150 OBA continued to pound San Bernardino. However, being that most of the Russians had routed out from the OBA last turn, we did not take any more casualties. The Germans were mostly cautious as they approached the wall of wire, where most units remained on top of the wire at the end of the turn. Clubby continued to bring his StuG's forward and found another AP mine hex without damage. San Bernardino is mostly quiet as the Russian defenders are all listening to propaganda speeches behind the line. We did manage to land a few decent defensive fire shots, but nothing major.

Russian Turn 2

Sadly, Matt drew a red card on one of our OBA modules that had the potential to put more hurt onto Bryan's troops. We shifted the other OBA module over to cover the entrance to San Bernardino that the Germans were funneling towards. No major events this turn, but at the end of two turns, the casualty cup is pretty even.

German casualties: 8-0, 4-6-7 x 2.5, 4-4-7 x 1.5

Russian casualties: 4-4-7 x 2.5, 4-2-6 x 1

That always sucks to lose the member of a club. I was saddened having to move to Florida and leave the Bunker club after being a member for 30+ years.

We got through another turn this past week.

It was our first week without Jim, and another week without Matt...no worries, I am used to carrying the team.

German Turn 3.

I got lucky rallying a broken 8-1 leader, who then rallied the two squads with him (survivors of the rocket strike). We all forgot about their OBA, so the SR sat in the grain north of San Bernardino.
During movement, Clubby and Bryan moved under the wire in numerous locations and began to search, locating multiple minefield locations. They moved two StuGs to N23 and bypass of M24 to kill of several broken Russian units in M23...we have a HIP 45LL ATG in N24 facing in the correct direction, but I decide to hold fire until next prep fire phase. Clubby moved a few more units into San Bernardino, as well as advancing through the grain fields to the north.
We have two OBA modules, one dropping 80mm harassing fire and the other doing nothing (Matt drew a red card last week)...I drew a black card to get the second module (also 80mm) to drop it as harassing fire into its pre-registered hex in E31, and it drifted into E30...I kept the second one going in G25. Good locations for both, catching multiple German units along the wire...I just rolled poorly and did not do much other than a lot of Pin results and a few breaks.

Russian Turn 3.

In prep fire, I opened fire with the 45LL ATG in N24 at the side shot on the StuG in N23...rolled a 5,6 to hit without rate and to lose concealment...that sucks, but still have a good final kill number of 9...I roll another 5,6...sigh...that sucks even more. What else could go wrong? I decide to attempt an intensive fire shot, and I again roll 5,6. Back to back to back 11's. Bryan and Clubby were quite delighted.

Not much else happened during the turn. I took the few shots that I had available, but again mostly rolled poorly and did not do much damage. I did abandon the L2 observation spot in Z28 and moved downstairs as he was attracting multiple area acquisition counters.

At the end of 3 full turns, the casualty count is roughly equal at 5 German squads and an 8-0, and 5.5 Russian squads.

We did play another turn last week...but then I went out of town for a few days to visit my son and see his final performance as he wraps up his Master's Degree. <insert proud Dad emoji>
Apologies for the lack of details in this update...I need to do these sooner.

Basically, it was the polar opposite of the previous week.

I pissed of Clubby and Bryan by drawing two more black cards for my OBA batteries. Urah!!! When dropping the OBA, I forget which half of the turn, I called upon our late club member Eric Visnowski to give me a "Baby Jesus" (as Eric used to call it when he rolled a 1,2) and I got it...and then, after thanking Eric, I asked him to help me with another "Baby Jesus"...and I got it again. Back to back called 3's...Wheeeeeeeeee!!!!

Bryan brought on a platoon and a Brumbaer onto the North edge at AA1...I have a 50mm MTR in Z11 who landed a crit into the building in AA9 where Bryan had an 8-1, 4-6-7, MMG...random selection got the squad with a K/3 to leave a broken halfsquad.

The Germans continue their push along the wire to get through...about half of their attempts to get under the wire succeeded...and they found more mines the hard way. However, they are beginning to get some labor status to make clearances in both wire and mines soon.

The broken 45LL ATG in N24 rolled a "1" to repair itself...then we got to have fun with the StuGs moving over the elevated RR (wall) into O24 & P24...but due to N24 having TEM (debris), Clubby correctly pointed out that I could not get Wall Advantage over the hexside (excellent rule knowledge on his part)...so then all of my hits were hull hits to become misses...damn.

The Germans found some AT mines...one StuG was immobilized, while another just sailed through carelessly. Go figure.

In the NE corner, the Germans continue to push SE through the two giant light grainfields and captured a Trench in N16.

Several fires are burning...fire, fire...we now have Blazes in K27 & K28...Flames in L27, N20, and P21.

The official Dirt Cup count is now...
German: 8-1, 8-0, Hero (no points, just counting for giggles), 8.5 squads.
Russian: 5.5 squads.

It will be German Turn 5 this week. Will it end, or will one of us take the risk and push for extra turns?
(If I get good dice rolls, hot sniper, or more black OBA cards...after Clubby punches me, they might want it to end. 🤬 🤣:p )

Btw one of my favorites by The B-52s.
My personal favorite B-52s song is a tie between Devil In My Car ("HEEELP!!!" makes me laugh every time) and Planet Claire...I first heard them in the dorms in Berkeley (no, I did not attend there, I just used to party there in high school).

Tonight was a trading of shoes and walking a mile...Clubby could not make it and Matt was here, so Bryan got to learn what it feels like to get double teamed. (Not so funny when it's your Mom...)

Due to the large number of moving units for the Germans, we only got through half of a half turn...called it a night at the end of Defensive Fire Phase in German T5. We did spend a fair amount of time catching up before starting (we need to get it more under control, we tend to socialize a lot when we meet)...and Bryan needed time to set up reinforcements.

German T5

Nothing remarkable in Rally phase...I repaired a MMG that can not see anything, and rallied a squad with a LMG in San Bernardino (M27).

Prep Fire Phase...Bryan shifted and converted the 150mm OBA SR to try to hit the 45LL ATG in N24, and it drifted into O25. The bad news is that it did break the ATG crew in N24, and the good news is that it killed a 75L StuG in P24.

Movement Phase...
Lots of moving forward and searching in the large light grain fields resulted in a line of Germans along the elevated railroad (wall) in N15-N18. In the area just north of San Bernardino, most of the units declared clearance attempts in a few minefield locations. In the central area, our 80mm OBA is in F28 where we have Wire and Bryan has a StuG and 5 squads, so Bryan starts to move units out to clear the overstacking (brokies had routed there, then the OBA found them)...a Sapper squad attempted to get under the Wire to exit the hex and caught a MC from the OBA, rolled snakes to get HOB, then rolled 5,6 to go Berserk...and his target is the squad in a Trench in N31, along his charge he found mines in J30 & K31 and was shot at by two HMGs who both used the opportunity to lay down firelanes...which all combined to eliminate the Berserk Sapper (TM) through two K/ results in there.
Somewhere in there we got two snipers...one was a hot sniper that reduced a broken squad, and the other was a warm sniper that killed a 7-0 (rolled 5 on wound severity).
Bryan had lined up a lot of StuGs and squads to enter along the West edge, with most of them heading towards the San Bernardino village. By the time Bryan got everyone moved, it was time for us to call it for the night.

It will be the German Advancing Fire Phase when we meet next week.

Current Dirt Cup totals...

German: Leaders x3, 10.5 squads
Russian: 5.5 squads

Sounds like a good time was had by all, sorry I missed it. I've already blocked off next wednesday with regards to work. Couldn't be helped this week, I had a regular customer planning a last minute camping trip for his cancer stricken adult daughter while she's still feeling up to it. Had to get his mammoth RV taken care of for him.

Our weekly campaign game night has been on an extended hiatus...and will continue for a while due to a combination of life events outside of ASL. My family and I just completed relocating to a new home which consumed the last two months...We leave on Tuesday for a 3-week vacation in Germany...Then to D.C. for the fireworks display on the 4th of July. We should resume our CG in mid-July.

We did complete the first scenario before I had to start packing the house. We did make notes for losses and such, but I can not locate them at the moment to provide details.

Both teams seem to be happy with the progress so far. From the Russian perspective, we met our goal of preventing a German breakthrough in the first scenario. Losses for both sides were not heavy, but not insignificant either.
