In the DFPh, two conscripts with 8FP fire at a broken enemy unit at +5 on the IFT. Is the broken unit now DM or not? Snake eyes causes the conscripts to cower to the 4FP column, which has no effect. But a 3 + 5 no cowering is an 8 on the 8 column resulting in a NMC. So which is it? With rules citations and explanations, please. Thanks.

He's DM
The question is not whether you achieved a result but whether it was possible to ever achieve an NMC.
The taking the possibility of cowering into account means that if you need to roll a 2 to get a nmc and that 2 will result in your shit cowering so it is no longer an nmc, 1 or 2 columns will nor matter, then that shot can NEVER achieve an nmc so no DM.

Rules citation to follow.

10.62 DESPERATION MORALE (DM): DM is a condition which afflicts any unit during the Player Turn it breaks (even if it breaks voluntarily) or any already broken unit which is subsequently attacked by CC/WP, or enough FP (taking the possibility of Cowering into account) to possibly inflict at least a NMC result on the target.

So with your 8 firepower +5 you get an nmc on a roll of 3. Roll 1,1 the shot covers to a 7 on the 4 for a PTC. BUT THIS DOES NOT MATTER.
In the same way if you'd rolled a 5 for a net 10 and no effect, it would not matter. For you to enforce DM you just need the possibility of getting the nmc.
The key figures are, with cowering a possibility, 1fp +1, 2fp +2, 4fp +3, 6fp +4 tem and so on.

Tips from the Trenches, from ASL Journal 7.

A 1 FP attack with +1 DRM inflicts DM on a broken unit and is potentially eligible to inflict encirclement. Both rules (A10.62 and A7.7) require “enough FP (taking the possibility of Cowering into account) to possibly inflict at least a NMC.” On such an attack, an Original 3 DR could inflict a NMC. In contrast, a 2 FP attack with a +3 DRM could qualify only if the attacking unit were exempt from Cowering (e.g., Fanatic, Elite British, leader directed, etc.) since an Original 2 DR would Cower.

Thank you, Klas.

"that 2 will result in your shit cowering"

Agreed, cowering is shit! (Thanks for the fortuitously fantastic typo :) )

Also, didn't know about Cassie, cheers. Strong Hermione-vibes ("It's LeviOsa, not LevioSA!").

She's much older now but I've got plans on getting her to do another couple of explains vids. She's up for it.
