Hi everyone!

Just to let you all know that after our unfortunate venue cancellation at Writtle this year, Double One 2026 is on at a new venue from the 25th of June to Sunday the 29th, priced at £40 for the attendance fee!

Sadly, after merging with Anglia Ruskin University, Writtle can no longer accommodate 1-1 on the same terms as previous years, so it is now not only well out of our price range, but its new conference centre and accommodation regulations mean we simply cannot stay there and leave our ASL kit in their facilities 24/7.

However - and hear us out… Double One 2026 shall be held at …The Aylesford Priory, in Kent.

B&B Accommodation is literally above the conference centre, which is laid out as a quadrangle, as seen below (marked as 21)

With rooms upstairs, ‘above the shop’, so to speak. However, while they are actually quite pleasant (infinitely more so compared to Writtle, much better by Blackpool standards) - they are not en suite - there are 4 sets of shower and toilet blocks - monastically clean - at each corner of the building.

They provide B&B for £60 per night, and do lunch as well - £10-15 ish prices and there is also a tea room in the grounds should you prefer that for lunch or snacks. All meals are served in the 13th century Pilgrim’s Hall located in the Great Courtyard. They can also do evening meals (same price) - but that is by arrangement in advance (sort of like how we booked the curry night at Writtle in previous years) so you will have to book ahead.

However, there are several places to dine nearby (a couple of pubs and a restaurant) for evening meals. The priory is a five minute walk from them - so plenty of opportunities for food, a decent pint and a catch up!

It is also a religious site of pilgrimage, and there are Carmelite monks in residence in the main buildings - there will be people turning up to pray and there will be visitors in the estate in general - but not amongst your counters in the conference centre! On the up side, I dare say you could get your dice blessed by the monks at the chapel

We would really appreciate it if you could give us your (non binding) intention to attend on the View From The Trenches website by the end of the 1st week of Jan 2026 so that we can give the Priory a rough indication of the number of attendees.

In January, we will be in touch with more details.

Do get in touch if you have any further questions,

Gary and Morris

Hi All.

Just a quick update regarding Double One.

So far, 13 of you have been kind enough to register your interest in attending via View From The Trenches - thank you!

Now, I know that in past years and for most events, we have all been a little haphazard in signing up for attendance until much closer to the event date.

However, as The Priory is a new venue for us with their own style of doing things, we would like to get in touch with them with a more accurate set of attendance figures so that they can plan what to do with the rest of their facilities.

If you haven't already, could we please ask you to give us your (non binding) intention to attend on the View From The Trenches website in the in the next couple of weeks so that we can give the Priory a better indication of the number of attendees, and ensure that we can keep our reservation in the conference centre?
Cheers,

Gary and Morris

What a terrific venue! Reminds me of my stay at l'Abbaye d'Ardenne three decades ago, only better. Will have to show the Mrs.

Is this going to be held in June and on an annual basis thereafter?

That's the plan, if we can make good with the Priory. If this year works out for us and them, then it's on there for as long as they will have us.

Great, thanks for the reply.

My wife was asking how close it was to the City and was pleased to learn it was a short (and affordable) train ride. :)
