At first, probably not. But the unrelenting purchase of upwards of 30 - 35 issues covering all 90 chapters, at 35€ each, I won't be surprised if interest wains over time. It's a 900€ to 1050€ commitment as envisioned right now. A lot can change as production becomes more understood so I remain hopeful. -- jim

Fair point. The production schedule could change. More issues per year, or less. The material might be condensed, dropping some subjects, illustrations, or what have you. Putting off some material (almost) indefinitely. Years could pass before we see a deep dive into Ammo Dumps or Animal Pack.

But we're largely an older, curmudgeonly lot. We grew up on subs to Nat Geo, Reader's Digest, and Columbia Records. Many households sprung for a 32-volume set of Encyclopedia Britannica.

A day may come when the authorities confiscate our dice for our own safety. What then? What will we read in our rockers to pass the days?

My vote's for paper, not pixels.

I am very happy to see this finally being printed. I proofed every chapter of Jim’s book many years ago. I learned a ton. He is a rules master rivaling Perry IMHO.

One of the better, if not best, arguments for the project. Although I do hope that Mr. Stahler's opus is broad enough to shed some light on how the system evolved from SL to ASL, decisions made, and why.

Too often I find myself thinking that this or that rule was different at one time. After almost half a century, it's difficult to distinguish between something I once read in SL, COI, CoD, GI, ASLRB1, or an earlier version of ASLRB2. Granted I do, for the most part, have copies of pages replaced by latter versions of ASLRB2. So there's that. Still, I wish we had access to all of this material in one place, along with a time line that tracked changes over the years. Even better, if each significant change included an explanation for the revision, not unlike the recent exercise documented in Journal 16. While I don't expect to ever see that level of system-wide detail, I'm really looking forward to Mr. Stahler filling in some of those gaps.

Houses not tied to a fixed income with diminishing purchasing power. It could be that the glut of scenarios supports this product. I doubt any of us need more scenarios or more counters. It could be well timed. People are becoming discerning in what they purchase. -- jim

Ah. What you really want to see is Don Greenwoods ASL rulebook. It is marked up with papers, notes in the margin, and all sorts of interesting tidbits of how the game moved forward. I have seen it once and asked if I could borrow it for a couple hours just to run the pages through a scanner. Alas, Don thought ill of the idea. That rule book is worth its weight in counters if you could get it. -- jim

Ah. What you really want to see is Don Greenwoods ASL rulebook. It is marked up with papers, notes in the margin, and all sorts of interesting tidbits of how the game moved forward.

We can only hope that it's preserved in a public archive at some stage.

Yes, and no.

My sense is that many older players are buying fewer new releases. They're increasingly selective in what they do purchase. At the same time, many have taken up new hobbies and spent a bundle on them.

Others continue to collect almost everything. Isn't that the point of collecting? To collect more and more. My book cases are overflowing, yet it hasn't stopped me from ordering the latest volume in this or that series of books. I prefer the physical product, something that can be read with less strain on the eyes.

At some point we'll all stop buying new stuff. Long after my last screen burns out--eyesight and the elements willing--I'd like to spend more of my day on the deck reading.
