During our sunday game my opponent raised this question:

Does. a unit IN a foxhole/trench on a second level hill and no other obstacle have LOS along a cliff hexside to a lower level hex?

We didnot find any rules that forbid that LOS but he found it weird.

As you've stated, nothing in the rules addresses that so shoot away.

Doesn't B11.2 represent LOS ALONG the Cliff hexside? That's not exactly the question. I believe he's asking if he's entrenched and viewing a unit THROUGH the cliff hexside does he have LOS to a lower unit. Which the answer is yes.

I think the OP speaks of LOS along a cliff hexside.

I agree with Clubby, while the OP says along a cliff hexside, I think the mean across a cliff hexside.

In this picture a unit in a foxhole in V5 can see over the cliff to T6, T5, T4, etc.

Remember English is not the first language of many players so it would be nice if @tailesin would clarify his question.

The context of second level to ground level makes it clear that "along" is meant to be "across" as in otherwise adjacent (but not ADJACENT).

Fire "along" a cliff hexside never blocks LOS regardless of the elevation of the unit, assuming that is the only operating variable.

I don't see your conclusion as compelling.
You may be right... or not.
If @tailesin chimed in, he could tell us - and give some feedback about our answers.

Maybe a pretty picture might help some interpret the question asked.

Both have LOS ACROSS the hexside.

And this would be the nature of the first question [Q]Does. a unit IN a foxhole/trench on a ...hill and no other obstacle have LOS along a cliff hexside to a lower level hex? [/q]

Just in case some players can't visualize this effect and difference between the two distinctions.

Not related to Foxholes & Cliffs, but while we're at it:

Worth to keep in mind the Gun Depression rules:

Imagine your Gun sitting in T6 and wanting to fire on an enemy unit in T5, U6, U7 or T7 - can't be done.

"B11.31 No vehicle armament, IFE, or ordnance may fire through a cliff hexside to an adjacent lower level Location [EXC: LATW other than PIAT (C13.61) or MTR with minimum range of 1 hex]. Other SW and Small Arms Fire are not so restricted."

I once learned this the hard way. There is one board that has a Cliff next to a hexrow of Open Ground, the latter next to the board edge. I lost that scenario BIG time because I had my "deadly" Antitank Gun perched upon that Cliff "guarding" the exit. Sure enough, my opponent paraded through his tanks with my Gun not being able to target them. His Exit VP piled up like coins spilling forth from a slot machine on a jackpot.
