Battle of Brienne 29th January 1814...............2.30pm, ( GT 22 of 42 - French versus Allied A.I.).

Grouchy's Cavalry Corps has already made contact with Russian Cossack/cavalry screens, north-eat of Brienne. These have been badly mauled and thrown back by leading regiments of French Cuirassiers. The advance continues until two miles north of Brienne; a sizeable force of Russians are sighted astride the main road.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lesson in complacency  - dealing with the Russian cossacks was relatively easy, albeit they had numerous units. The lead French Cuirassiers regiments were a bit tired but morale was high.

They were then confronted with an enemy force with combined cavalry, infantry and guns..............blocking the main road to Brienne.
The A.I. is also hiding numbers as I have noted that what I can see is not all that is there....the wheatfields do a good job of concealment. The French cavalry test the defence with one regiment, which in retrospect should have stopped 3 hexes further back, but an eay Cossack target lured them in for the kill. The ensuying melee was lacklustre, routing the Russians. The enemy guns opened up and dpwned 25 French Cuirassiers. Complacency takes it's first hit.

The decision was made not to engage the enemy position frontally ; especially as the guns were at the time , stacked with infantry.

Since the guns were facing North-west...... a larger force of French cavalry would move to their right flank and try to harass or engage the enemy cavalry there. Three French Cuirassiers regiments would still continue moving on the enemy left flank, ostensibly to draw fire from their guns; while the larger force of 5 French cavalry regiments would flank on the right, unmolested by enrmy gunfire.

The A.I. for some reason, decided to turn their guns and remove it's infantry support to the rear. Complacency has it's secod hit - ; as I , as the French player failed to note this, being distracted by the juicy prospect of attacking a lone enemy cavalry unit and puncturing this flank.

General de Brigade Thiry decided to charge with the 2nd and 3rd Cuirassiers regiments against the enemy horse. The Russian gunners worked quickly and effectively to open up an initial salvo of destruction which felled 50 horsemen..... the French, seeing this unnerving spectacle, before them, quickened the pace, which eased matters somewhat, losing another dozen and then finally before contact , lost a further 11 horsemen.

The final melee was favourable with a loss of 6 Cuirassiers to 25 Russian cavalry. Overall loss being 79 valuable French heavy horsemen to 25 Russian.

This is an object lesson in complacency /gung- ho attitude after initial ease of play and how, sometimes, the A.I. can be a real booger..............:) .

I got this a while back ; a 6mm model of the Chateau de Hougomont. This is to add atmospherics to the Company level board-game of the Battle of Waterloo.

You cannot see from the picture but it is incredibly detailed ; more so than the larger scale versions. Once painted........will definitely add a bit of colour. Considered getting the La Haye Sainte model but it just gets in the way in the middle of the field of battle whereas the Hougomont model can serve as background, placed to the west or north-west of it's 2d counterpart. Detail is exemplified by fallen plaster areas and more realistic windows /doors and other embellishments.

Only just Fine surface paint/spray primed it in Tamiya red. It was a slight mistake in the colour choice which is usually grey or white but seems to spread more thinly without clogging small detail and does not dry and then flake. Had that problem with model spray primer paint in the past. .

Watched a war movie during the holidays and it inspired me to look at the feasibility of figure gaming/diorama simulation of it. Bought one item which is crucial and have been looking at other possible add- ons, which are quite numerous/available.

Once I have the initial item and it is OK........passes the Marshal Lannes, no crappiness standard ; then the Secret Project may have some legs..................all from movie inspiration.................Niiiice !...:) .

The State of Wargaming in 2026........................from a personal point of view and a wider perspective'. I would say that it is pretty positive/good.

Pc Gaming - I've noted that the Annual Report from Wargame Design Studio shows a steady growth in sales, which is not surprising, as they are still producing what people want......namely, expansive and historically detailed simulations from a plethora of historical periods. The cross/point between board wargames and these games is still a draw and relevant.......

Total War Medieval 3 is in production and should be conformed to the older style of games. Board-game Geek gives you reviews and the criticism of game owners, which sometimes has to be taken with a pinch of salt but you can get an inkling of any potential issues. Gone are the days of blind buying at a local hobby store which costs precious dough if you make a hasty or erroneous purchase. Done that a couple of times, when younger...... .

Board - Wargaming -.... Decision Games is still out-putting; La Bataille is also churning out slowly; Independent designers pick up the mark ever so often, the main brute in this field is of course, Grognard Simulations , which caters to the cream of Wargame Nut Simulators....................I Love It !......:D .

Figure Gaming - There is a horde of stuff available in many scales.... I am always surprised at the variety of stuff you can get with Napoleonics 1/72.......Wurtermberg Infantry, Hanoverian,, Bavarian etc. Hat Industrie have just released a new line of 1/72 French and Prussian figures for the 1805/6 time period with appropriate uniforms and so on.
There is also the multitude of Mdf/resin printing offerings which present stuff that mainstream companies will not touch. 28mm or 1/72 scale, no problemo......personalized products are also a possibility......

Above and beyond that; there is of course, the ( Internet ) which introduces Vasl gaming into the equation.

The Internetti spaghetti allows you to interact with other weirdos; I mean, Hobby enthusiasts, who may or may not have a collection of meticulously labelled and catalogued shoe boxes filled with dog-doo 💩 , under their beds.......................Who knows ???......

" You've never had it so good ! "...... :).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Battle of Kulm 1813...........Another example of A.I. sneakiness. Halfway through the battle; everything is going relatively smoothly for Vandamme and the French. An attempt to throw back Russian cavalry and guns has worked and then out of the blue, the Russian cavalry, who have so far been very lacklustre, launch two cavalry charges, resulting in 4 French units running for the hills........leaving the French left flank vulnerable.....did not see that coming at all, being pacified 🙈 by earlier Russian cavalry nonchalance

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tick ! 40 Books... As cheap as toenail fungus,...............I have only one other Peninsular war book........so it makes sense. :) . This is probably not the best one but will do...

Against the Odds Annual 2023 - La Bataille de Kulm.

Vandamme versus Ostermann - Tolstoi

After playing the Pc Version of this battle in Campaign Leipzig; I finally made up my mind to purchase this magazine game. I find that I would rather have this simulation of a relatively obscure battle of the Napoleonic era than not.

The magazine is quite chunky and apart from the rules , has a decent amount of relevant material. Very well illustrated with battle maps. The back article on Oliver Cromwell does not diminish the overall feel. The vibe of the whole thing is oozing enough to spark interest. Definite points for enthusiasm !......

The play aid charts are good and you also get 4 playing cards and a small , separate counter sheet for the leaders and Game Turn Markers. The leader counters are excellent to behold; the pic does not do them justice.

34164

As mentioned elsewhere ; the counters are above standard whilst the map is typical " La Bataille " style. In person , better than I thought it would be but still lacking fine terrain detail.

Overall, very pleased with this.........Is it worth the dough ?.... I would say so, with the caveat that you should be a strong Nappy fan. I have seen that some nose picking varmints think that the OOB is a bit askew............................that remains to be seen.

I have heard that ATO will no longer be doing any more stuff; so this will possibly be a rarity in due time,.....................................not for me , of course. :) .

It's almost Birthday time; 🎂 so some decision has to be made. This one has a strong temptation factor; mostly because I don't have it. Again , the pull factor is the scaling.
Just the Omaha Beach landing has 4900 counters involved. From my experience with the Salerno game, that means that there are actually 5200 counters of which about 240 will be blank. It is pretty pricey, especially when you have to get the Pointe de Hoc Base game to be able to play it.

I will leave it to fate............................................and greeeeeeed. :) .

Finally got some decent cattle...........the smaller ones I already have can be used as juveniles. The large males with horns are slightly too big for the Esci/Italeri Zulu 1/72 scale models but as background noise , they will do.................................Mooooooo !. 🐄 .

Death Ride Normandy - Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach.

Ponte du Hoc
is the base game which allows you to play the other games in the series.

4 - "11 x 17" map-sheets......280 counters of which 47 are blank/spares. Three 10 sided die of good size.
This game simulates the US ranger attack at Omaha of German heavy, long range guns. Chart and table booklet and Oob displays, etc.

Omaha Beach - ( the Big One ).

23 and a half counter-sheets comprising 4840 counters of which 216 are blank/spares.
22 " 11 x 17 " map-sheets.

On the back of the box ; it says there are approximately 4900 counters but you have to take into account the Pointe du Hoc counters which are part of the Omaha beach assault. This gives a Grand Total of 5056 counters of which 263 are blank/spares.

The Omaha Beach game comes in two boxes.

First Impression of Counters.........they are pretty good ; especially German SS which are brown/black flecked. The Company coloured edging for American units to highlight organization is probably unnecessary as this game is unlikely to appeal to Chipmunk brainers, who need extra help with unit organization.
There is one counter-sheet solely made up of Landing craft counters.................looks like you have to ferry the platoons in one by one. Improved position markers are good. Even some Tiger Tank fright markers ?????

First Impression of Maps......the sea is excellent; the land is better than I thought it would be; a good greeny background. The rivers are imposing, as they should be; the small road and path network is very dense................if I had done this ; I would have made them a little lighter and thinner. Overall; after you get used to this new type of terrain map, you accept it's functionality and will be happy enough to counter push/place.

Still crazy to think that 5056 counters and 26 map-sheets are just recreating the Omaha Beach landing area and hinterland. Add to that, that you can get an Air Interdiction/Maintenance and overall Supply/logistics supplement , ( 1300 counters ), just for the American landings at Normandy, and you are definitely dealing with an intense wargame simulation.

Conclusion - I may be delving into this before Decision Games Atlantic Wall ( revamp ), which may remain as a stroke box only exercise. It all depends on how much I like the Combat system and gameplay.............

Intended for Cwaaaazy wabbits...........................................only. 🥕🥕🥕.

Here is one of the Scenario display map-sheets for 10th June. You cannot see the hex grid but it is a long way from the beach to even further south. .
Not much information on the Geek..............no surprise there................

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34310

There are two pages of Terrain Info; this is the first one. Interesting to note that there is light and heavy bocage differentiation and flooded and normal causeways. Also contour lines.....I may have been hasty in the initial sight of the map; what look like secondary roads/paths , may in fact be contour lines.....???? or at least some of them.
Found some more charts and Oob's under the maps..........you could feed an elephant with all the card in this. :) .

Count Peter Petrovsky - Petrograd Hussars Regiment. Born in St. Petersburg 1771. Married to Cateryna Meowska. Father to four kittens. 🐱 .

Purred at Clawsterlitz 1805, Furiedland 1807 and Borodino 1812, ( where he was awarded , " Gold whiskers " for gallantry ) .

Died from scratch wounds at Battle of Leapzig 1813. 🐾🐾🐾 ................................................................................................................................................

34336

His widowed wife, ( Countess Meowska ) collected together his personal letters, manuscripts and diary entries; transcribing ( scratching ), them into a one volume book; which was published pussthumousely in 1862, two years after her death. 🐾 .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34382

Here we have the Set Up Scenario card for the US Ranger assault on the gun battery at the Pointe du Hoc. There is one ranger company with nine units against potential counter attacks by what looks like a regiments worth of Germans. :( .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
34405

I am not surprised that there is one counter-sheet comprising solely of Landing Craft counters. Here is the actual LCT Maniferst for the landing on Omaha Beach. Each separate symbol is some sort of LCT. ( Pic taken from Osprey Omaha booklet ).
The main re-inforcement schedule stops at 11th July 1944.

I have heard somewhere that further Campaign add ons are to be produced to take the Campaign to the end of August. It could out Kursk the Death Ride Kursk game in size. .

So, it seems that the intention for Death Ride Normandy is to release further titles to expand the Normandy Campaign to the end of August 1944 and beyond.

Future titles include :

34488

DRN - All American
DRN - Cherbourg
DRN - Cutting Cotentin
DRN - Perriers
DRN - Caumont/St.Lo
DRN - Epsom/Spring
DRN - Goodwood/Charmont

This equates to a behemoth of around 16 boxed games in total , ( excluding supplements ). .

I have only had a brief look at the Master Rulebook which is 74 pages minus about 10 for index and charts.

34458

The good news is that there is Naval/ bombardment gunfire against the beaches, and more importantly; you can fire upon the Landing Craft as they approach. The Landing Craft, of which there are 5 main types can also fire on the beaches with machine guns. There is also the effect of drift on sea movement. Transport ships seem to be able to carry a battalion's worth of troops as the underside of the counter shows a battalion/regiment designation. These move to a rally area wherein the troops are disembarked by platoon onto Lcv's which carry them to the landing beach. :) .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34479

Project " El Cid " has taken it's first baby 👶, tentative step............................................." For God , the Cid and Spain,...........Spaaaaiiiin ! "...... :) .

👍 .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34480

You cannot siege Valencia without, " Siege towers ". These are a good size and have ramps; I have already got some thick thread to act as rope for the ramps. :) .

" Don Ordonez; We attack Valencia,...........................tonight ! " .

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34481

And here we have a Ben Yousef figure. I got this about the same time as the large El Cid figure, last year. It is at 28mm scale and very nicely detailed. Will stand out somewhat with 25mm figures but as a major commander..................not a big issue.

" then this will be more than a battle; ...............it will be our God against ,.......YOURS ! ".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34495

Battle of Culloden Moor -16th April 1746 - Scots ( Human ) versus English ( A.I ).

First attempt............... things are going well and I am about a third of the way through; I was thinking that I maybe could win this, albeit taking more loss , and lo and behols ,............. I get a 9 unit rout...................Sigh ! . " Me brekky oats wur evacuated fasser din dey kid rin ! ". " Aye laad ! ".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

34497

👍.......
