With a heavy heart letting everyone know that Pierce Mason passed away this weekend.
Thank you, Chas, for passing on on the sad news. Pierce was a gentleman, a fun conversationalist and a most enjoyable opponent. I'm glad I got to meet and play him in person at ASLOK, and I can honestly say it was his encouragement (even while he, unbeknownst to me, was unwell) that helped me return to running online tournaments. I will definitely miss him, and I certainly won't forget him.

PS: I'm almost 100% certain that Pierce is the only ASL Opponent I have played face to face, via VASL PbeM, and via Live VASL both pre-and post introduction of VOIP.

Pierce was a great dude! Always a pleasure to play. Always a bunch of jokes and ball busting when we played. The game almost didnt matter.
I know he played a lot of games on VASL with many different opponents.
He will surely be missed.

So sorry to hear this news. Pierce was the first person that I played PBEM with after decades of reading / loving ASL but not playing it. I still have the 'Lenin's Sons' setup we started in my 'save for Pierce when he is better' folder ... I wish his family solace and may he RIP. - Michael

I played Pierce a few times, via VASL and he contributed to my ASL AAR collection with: ASL17 – LOST OPPORTUNITIES
What I wrote about his play style:
All the way through I was being pushed and pushed, not by aggression but through constant pressure, I hardly felt like I had much room to breathe and my defence was only based on shooting as much as I could out of the overwhelming number of attacker pressing down on me... I won, but I don’t feel I deserved to.

All the best to you Pierce, my condolences to those you have left behind.

I haven't been to the first one. Screw those guys. And screw the guys who haven't tried to talk to me in 40 years and try to friend me on Facebook. You weren't my friend in high school and you aren't my friend now.
<shrug> You sound bitter? Seems a shame. I'm the one that moved away and there are only 2-3 folks from then who I have established contact with.....one of the few things of value FaceBook has done for me.
The vast majority of my wife's class (1988) is already dead. I was class of 1987 and every dude I knew in her class is in the ground.
Class of '87? All dead? I am class of '72 and we do not seem to have near that mortality rate?

Hey Jazz, not bitter. I just learned to keep my circle small. I looked at FB one time and had over 500 friends. Then I looked at who actually interacted with me. I started unfriending, and by the time I was done I had 50 left. For almost 10 years it stayed there with the rule "if one enters one must leave." You would not believe how that cuts down on the BS and noise. I am up to around a hundred now, but they are people I actually interact with, not people who friended me because they were nosy.

I have never once FB-friended someone in the workplace, nor have I accepted a work-related FB friend request. My work and home are separate.

Class of 87 is still pretty good. Not that I am keeping track. Class of '88 is dropping like flies -- accidents, drug ODs, medical conditions like heart attacks and stroke, cancer. It's really extraordinary.
