I was talking with a newish player here in Pittsburgh about AM converting to NAM on wire when the required additional wire MF exceed the unit’s MF allowance.

looking in the tome I was surprised to see a rule I never knew existed.

in B26.4 a unit starting on wire can decide, AFTER its wire MF roll, how many PP it wants to try to carry under the wire. Never noticed this one.

It does make sense from the perspective of units being able to drop portaged SW at any time during their MPh.

@Paul NJ and @pensatl1962, you both speak to a semi-sleaze move we occasionally see in scenarios with victory conditions that require exit. That is, units dumping SW so that they can scamper across the line. Scenario designers can counter this by either forbidding abandonment of functioning SW, or by awarding 1 Exit VP for each HMG, MMG and SW MTR exited.

I don't think it a sleaze move as much as other sleezy ASL rules. Though I would agree with SSR awarding VP for weapons. But not restricting abandoning them. Ditching weight to move is a battlefield decision that was more common than you would think.

As someone who had to schlep a 50cal. I can attest to you that if the situation needed, I'm having the Spec4 mafia render it inoperable and ditching it. And then making up a good excuse as to why.
Me. "Sir, the 50 took a hit and the receiver was cracked, we spiked it and moved on"
The CO. " Outstanding Seargent! That was highly motivated fast thinking. Go to the armory and draw another .50cal".

George, sometimes that 5PP Soviet MMG just isn’t worth the hassle! 😂
Heck I'm bound to roll an 11 on the first or second shot, so yeah, it's getting ditched.
ME. Comrade Commissar, the barrel of the Goryunov melted and warped mowing down a company plus of Fascists invaders."
The Commissar. "Insolent dog, you have destroyed state property of the Soviet Union. Would you like a blindfold?"

Note that the word "functioning" was included. If a player wants to use a units fire phase to permanently disable a weapon and then walk away, that's a different story.
