Slitherine and Matrix merge to form Wargames Publishing Giant

[Seems like a good match to me!]

Matrix Games (www.matrixgames.com) and Slitherine Ltd (www.slitherine.com) today announced that they have signed a comprehensive agreement to merge the companies creating the world's largest wargaming specialist publisher. Both Brands have strong identities and core values and these will be maintained to provide maximum enjoyment and added value to all customers.

HPS Announces Ancient Warfare - Greek Wars

After the warriors of the Heroic period of the Trojan Wars came the Greek hoplite: a farmer turned soldier trained in the art of phalanx warfare. From 500 BC to 400 BC, the hoplites ruled supreme on the battlefield, fighting in classical Greece’s most memorable conflict. From the battles of Thermopylae to Marathon and Plataea to the Peloponnesian Wars, hoplites decided the course of empires.

HPS Greek Wars brings this era to computer gaming, with a full panoply of scenarios of Greek versus Persian and Greek versus Greek. Greek Wars has over 60 scenarios in which Athenians, Spartans, Persians, and many more clash in battles which still resound today. Scenarios allow players to deploy armies of the era using the full range of classical weapons, from infantry spears to bows and various types of cavalry. Command anything from the famous 300 Spartans to the mass armies of the Persian empire, 100,000 strong.

Civilization V Shipping with Steamworks

2K Games and Valve today announced an agreement to power all PC versions of the highly anticipated Sid Meier’s Civilization V with many of Steamworks’ features and offer a special Digital Deluxe Edition via Steam. In addition, customers who pre-order the regular or Digital Deluxe editions of Sid Meier’s Civilization V on Steam will be rewarded with a free map pack when the game launches in fall 2010.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V players will enjoy the benefits of the Steamworks’ features included in all PC versions such as auto-updating, Steam Achievements, downloadable content, multiplayer matchmaking and more.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition will expand players’ conquests with the new Babylonian civilization and their ruler, Nebuchadnezzar II (c. 630 – c. 561 B.C.). As King of Babylon, gamers will be able to expand their empire with advanced Babylonian Bowmen to rightfully earn the title of Nebuchadnezzar the Great. Sid Meier’s Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition will also include an in-depth “Behind the Scenes at Firaxis with Civilization V” video feature, as well as the game’s epic soundtrack.

Sword of the Stars: Complete Collection Release Date Announced

Sword of the Stars…just writing that name fills my mind with visions of dreadnaughts and laser beams.  While Kerberos’ 4X mainstay might not be as well known as Galactic Civilizations or Sins of a Solar Empire, it has nonetheless managed to carve out its own niche and populate it with rabid fans who love nothing better than to shout “Repensum est Canicula!”  How I can’t wait until SotS II makes its arrival sometime in the future.

In the meantime, those of you who have never played the original might want to take advantage of the latest Sword of the Stars package deal from Kerberos and Paradox.  Entitled Sword of the Stars: Complete Collection, this set includes the original plus all the excellent expansions (Born of Blood, A Murder Crows, and Argos Naval Yard) and is scheduled to dock on May 14th.  Best of all, it will also contain a new scenario (I hope Sol Force veterans can get their hands on it too!).

Legio Website Now Live

Anybody who knows me knows that if I had to choose just one game to play for the rest of my life, that game would undoubtedly be chess.  As Ely Culbertson once remarked, “There is no other game so esteemed, so profound and so venerable as Chess. In the realm of play, it stands alone in dignity."

Amen.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that many games try to emulate the core strengths of chess.  Unfortunately, I have found that such a seemingly successful formula usually backfires.  Why?  Well, to put it simply, why play a “chess-like” game when you can just play chess?  Why give up the rich heritage and massive global community of the original to play something like chess?

I have yet to find a compelling answer.

Nonetheless, I am supportive of games that try to emulate the world’s most perfect game.  While it may not be my cup of tea, chess-like games may well lead gamers back to the Royal Game itself…and that’s good enough for me!
