Aragorn’s Quest: The Story of Destiny Video Released

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest is the first videogame offering an authentic The Lord of the Rings gameplay experience designed for all ages to enjoy together. For the first time ever, The Lord of the Rings comes to the Wii, taking full advantage of the Wii-mote and Nunchuck – delivering action-packed motion-controlled gameplay.

In The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, preparations are underway in Hobbiton for a great party to welcome Aragorn, King of Gondor, and honor Samwise Gamgee for his service during the War of the Ring. With the King’s visit imminent, Samwise’s children are eager to learn more of this great man. Samwise, now Mayor, embarks on a colorful tale of the revered warrior, Strider—as Aragorn is known in his Ranger days—and his most valiant battles.

Here’s a taste of what players can expect (for some reason, it reminds me of Mount & Blade):

Nintendo DS and Wii Sales Back on Top

in

According to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, the Nintendo DS family of hand-held systems – including the new Nintendo DSi XL – set an all-time record for portable system sales in the month of March, selling more than 700,000 units nationwide. Sales of Nintendo's Wii console reached nearly 560,000 in March as post-holiday inventory began to improve. Nintendo systems accounted for 59 percent of all video game hardware sold in March.

"Demand for Nintendo fun continues unabated," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We're glad so many people are able to get their hands on our systems as we prepare for the May launches of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii and Picross 3D for our Nintendo DS systems."

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Shooters are funny beasts in that they only come in two varieties:  light weights that favor fun over realism (e.g., Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) or hardcore sims that are nearly as brutal as the real deal (ArmA II).  Vary rarely, if ever, do you find a shooter that hits the sweet spot between the two extremes.  Why that is, I don’t know but perhaps one day we will have a shooter that can please both audiences.

While it is too early to tell, perhaps the recently announced Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will fit the bill.  The Ghost Recon series does have a respectable pedigree and is the most prominent series to have attempted to please both ends of the spectrum, if with mixed results.  This newest chapter ventures into the arena of future warfare, a touchy subject that has wrecked its fair share of shooters as, for whatever reason, devs inevitably throw out the rule book and come up with some ridiculously fanciful stuff (thus alienating the realism crowd).  Case in point, the teaser vid for Future Soldier:

Nintendo Downloads Prove Anyone Can Be King

in

Have you ever wanted to be a king? Maybe the king of Los Angeles? The new Nintendo DSiWare game Gangstar 2: Kings of L.A. gives you a shot at becoming Southern California royalty. Over on the Virtual Console service, old-school gamers will, like, totally love the chance to become king of the '80s with the gnarly original arcade version of Zaxxon available for download.

Marines: Modern Urban Combat Coming to the Wii

Okay, this press release, while short of details, has piqued my curiosity:

"O Games announces Marines: Modern Urban Combat the new squad based shooter, exclusively for the Wii, out June 2010.

Become a Marine in this compelling and realistic squad based military shooter, using the tactics and tools of the real US Marine Corps. Lead your squad through the deadly streets of Beirut and command them to their posts using the intuitive Wii Remote controls.

Play in co-operative multiplayer mode where a second player can join in as the rifleman and help player one in completing the missions.

Marines: Modern Urban Combat allows players for the first time to play as a Marine, using their real life tactics to lead a squad to win the war.

Marines: Modern Urban Combat is out for the Wii June 2010."

Could this be the Wii's ArmA?  That's something I would like to see (but I'm not holding my breath)!

Nintendo Downloads Pack a Presidential Punch

In honor of Presidents Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the qualities that make a great leader, plus some exceptional games you can use to nurture them. Problem-solving skills are a must, both in the Oval Office and in the new Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: JUSTICE FOR ALL game for the WiiWare service. A way with words is essential, too, as you'll discover in Scrabble Classic for the Nintendo DSiWare service. Real Soccer 2010 proves the value of teamwork, while Spotto! highlights the importance of facing fearsome threats head-on. And while we're not sure how effective a hedgehog would be as commander-in-chief, the SEGA classic Sonic & Knuckles - now available to Wii owners via the Virtual Console - demonstrates real bipartisan appeal.
