Now that the equipment database can (officially) be modified with an XML editor, has anyone posted a handy chart detailing what each field in a database record means? Some are easily guessed, but some seem cryptic, like "vol" which in the few records I've looked at seems always to be 999 and flags 0 thru 7?

I know it could probably be pieced together by looking at the Bob Cross Bio Editor tutorial included in the latest version, but perhaps someone more clever than me has done the leg work?

Vol is supposed to be volume, but I'm not sure what it means off-hand.

Flags 1-7 are bit fields, that means that if you go into the calculator, set it to scientific, and click 'bin' you'll see the exact values, for exampe, 254 is 11111110.

The meaning of these corresponds to the values listed at the very botton of the file.

Several of the fields don't say what what they mean. I left them the way they were for BioEd compatibility. Early_rng is one that comes to mind<g>

I dimly remember NK posting that it was Length x width x height & that it was used with weight to determine the defense or armor value.

Here's what I posted in the "How to.." document:

Note the “Volume” value (probably in cubic meters). This is used to form the tank’s RCSB value by the formula RCSB = SQRT(Volume) x 20.4125. Bigger the RCSB, the easier the tank is to hit.

I figured the flags correspond to the equipment characteristics notes, which are divided into 7 flags. These characteristics can be added for example an APC. it is 2:armored plus 4:active defender gives you Flag0>6<
vol is still difficult to understand; squads, aircraft, artillery pieces have a value 999. A truck has 0 vol but an armoured truck has a vol of 13, same size vehicle. I think it something to due with the armour rating of a vehicle.

Does anyone know what equip1 and equip2 is for?

Can't help you on the flags, but why not to use BioEd, read the pdf file under start->programs->The Operational Art Of War III->Documentation->How to edit the equipment data base.pdf. The file also contains a link where to get it.

I have been fooling around with the XML Editor suggested in TAOW info, the XML Pad. Any items marked with question marks I am unsure of. I would be happy to (at some point) format this in an MS Word file and post it, if we can define all fields correctly and in more thorough fashion...

Record Fields in shown in XML Editor

NAME: Name of Equipment
COUNTRY: Country Name or "Common" and Date
EQUIP1: Icon to use from equip256 File
EQUIP2: Icon to use for 3D/Upper Right Game Screen Unit Box, an I*.* filename?
AT: Anti Tank Value
AP: Anti Personel Value
AA: Anti Aircraft Value
DF: Defense Value
ARTY_RNG: Artillery Range, in km, or serves as Combat Radius for Aircraft
EARLY_RNG: Early Warning Range, in km?
SAM_RNG : Surface To Air Missle Range, in km?
NUKE: Nuclear Value/Yield?
VOL: Volume - set at 999 for Inf, Guns/Mortars & Fixed Wing AC?
WEIGHT: Equipment weight, in kg
SHELL_W: Shell Weight
ARMOR: Armor Value?
FLAG0
FLAG1
FLAG2
FLAG3
FLAG4
FLAG5
FLAG6
FLAG7

Explanation of Flags is after Item 2017

Flags look like "byte sized" fields, each is 8 bits long and each bit can be set to 1 or 0. Each bit has a value of 2 raised to the N power, where N cooresponds to the bit position occupied in the byte. (The first position is considered position zero.) If you want to set more than one flag in a byte, add their values togther, and set the flag to that value in the XML editor.
