Firing MTR WP at a hex that is empty to the firer using ATT (obviously). In the hex is an entrenched unit which is behind a hedge, out of LOS to the firer. If firing HE, the unit would not be attacked per C3.33, but A24.31 seems to indicate that any unit in the targeted Location must take an NMC and reveal if concealed.

If the empty (to firer) hex is hit, does the entrenched unit within have to take the WP NMC?

We solved our own question. The answer is contained in C6.2, which states that mortar SMOKE fired at a hex containing a unit not known to the firer/spotter must get a hit on the hex with the ATT, but applies the Case K penalty while trying to do so.

Man, this rulebook needs better cross-referencing sometimes.

I think so....the WP MC is not technically an "attack" with an IFT or TK effects DR, which is what C3.33 deals with.

It is an "effect upon placement of the WP counter" in a location, and the entrenchments do not create a different location.

That is how I would play it until something more authoritative comes along....

Sounds reasonable and possibly even correct..... What the book needs is a searchable electronic version.

Even with a good search function, you need to know what question to ask or you get too many results.

This exact (pretty much) situation is described at the of the Bocage examples.

"...If the 3-3-7 attacks J5 with the MTR, the 4-6-7 cannot be hit since there are no non-hidden enemy units in LOS (C3.33). However, if it declares a WP MTR attack (with +2 Case K; C6.2) and hits the hex, the 4-6-7 must take the WP NMC, because all units in a Location with a WP counter must take a NMC when the WP is placed in that Location (A24.31)."

True, but checking the possible answers become much easier and less unwieldy and not not require physically flipping back & forth through pages of a book......

Even an electronic rulebook will not remove the requirement of a basic understanding of the game.

I don't know, I manage pretty well and still don't really understand what I'm doing! :)
