So...do the Americans who frequent these boards think you can turn us over in the match next Saturday???
Time we started getting the rivalry stoked up now....
Germans/Italians/Spanish/anyone....who's gonna win the thing ??

I certainly like America's chances compared to what they were up against in past world cup's. As for the Winner of the whole thing, I Have always cheered on Netherlands and Costa Rica and i dont even know if they are in the Cup this year.

If we take a point, it will be a success. If we don't advance out of the first round it will be a failure. Our un-doing will be our inability to control the ball in the mid-field playing with a lead. The team has to learn how to slow a game down and not put so much pressure on our back four. -- jim

I think USA have got a half decent team to be honest.
Certainly should get through what is a relatively benign group.
And I can certainly see USA getting at least a draw against us as we are notoriously slow out of the blocks.

To be fair, most Americans (I am an American, though an ex-Pat) don't care. Though with the rise of a generation that has grown up playing it and the utter mismanagement of MLB, this is changing. I am a somewhat interested but relatively uninformed observer, so will not venture an opinion myself. :)

It's not a bad side, and I think it ranks pretty close to the middle of the pack as World Cup sides go. Goal tending is our strength. Our back line can play inspired at times, dreadful at others. Our forwards don't seem to combine well but their pace off the ball makes them deadly. Dempsey and Donovan on the outside middies are a good combo. What we lack--and have always lacked--is a central mid-field player who can control the flow and pace of play. One who demands and gets the ball. Plays with flair when needed. Opens up a defense with the diagonal through ball taking advantage of all that pace. We lack the bone-crunching defensive mid-fielder who tucks in behind that engine and cleans up after him. If we had those two players, I would think we would have better chance than most to move deep into the tournament. As it is, if we get out of groups, I think we are lucky to get a win in any of the single elimination games all things being equal.

And I can certainly see USA getting at least a draw against us as we are notoriously slow out of the blocks.
The loss of Rio Ferdinand will make this interesting. Your side is deep enough you likely will be OK, but you hate to see you Capitan and central defender go down. It should be interesting. All the pressure is on you though, which is good for us. We can just go and play. -- jim

I think some of us who have watched Rio struggle all season will suspect his loss will have little impact. King is a perfectly adequate replacement, if not upgrade. Rio's not the player he was 4 years ago...

I think the USA has every chance of getting a result. It's the first game of the tournie so they will be up for it. They know the English players and their style and i think will match up well against them. I think they need to keep the game tight and keep men behind the ball. If they try to play an open game, as they did against the Czechs in the last world cup, they might come unstuck.

I'll be having a WC party with some American friends (no other English here in Des Moines) so it should be fun...

As much fun as watching icecream melt? I wonder if there is a YouTube clip watching grass grow?

I know it is the most popular sport in the world, but I just can't watch it.

Of course America won't win, it's the World Cup and there are other nations playing! The inhumanity :)

On a serious note, they've a pretty decent side with the ability to turn over a better side on their day - lets just hope it's not their day against England.......

I notice the USA did beat our team......

It was only a friendly, and we rested a fair few first string players. We try really hard to have good excuses on standby for this sort of thing!

I'll be on duty at the game, or nearby, as my Reserve unit is providing medical support for various games and what worries me is the number of broken hearts we might have to heal if England DON'T win! I don't think it's going to be a walk-over for England, but I'd be surprised if they don't get the points from this. The American team won a special place in our hearts after their performance in the Confederations Cup last year, and a lot of local folk are walking around festooned with the Stars and Stripes.

The U.S.A's chances against England are considerably greater against England than against the Rest of the World at ASLOK.
At least they beat England in 1950.
While they have never beaten the World at ASLOK.
A good bottle of Single Malt Whiskey is offered versus a good Bourbon.
Game on!

Pretty sure the ASLOK woofing thread is elsewhere... ;)

I'm one of the few Americans I know that will actually watch any if at all of the WC matches. I have two good buddies (one a Polish-American and the other a regular American-American) who have been into the Polish national team, the English Premier league and the European Cup. Over the decades I have meet up w/ those friends at Polish bars or Mexican bars to watch some of the matches on closed circuit TV, but mainly to drink a few beers and stay in touch with old friends. I will admit the top level matches can be pretty entertaining though, especially in the European Cup (described to me as the World Cup without Argentina and Brazil)

It's a decent sport but I find the level of purposeful "diving" for a penalty call especially in the penalty area where it leads to a 98.5% converted penalty kick a bit "tiring" to use a British word. Four years ago the WC match between Portugal and I think England was terrible. Each team's players spent more time diving to get a call than actually playing the game. It reminded me of the staged fight scene from the Cheech and Chong's Yellowbeard movie. International football ought to adopt a penalty box and 2 minutes penalties like hockey. That will make it better.

That being said, I always root against the USA. I figure the other side's fans would get more out of a win than us Americans so I root for those teams. Plus I root for the smaller nations. I'd love to see an African or Central American team win the dang thing.

How many non-american's have won the Grofaz...or WO, or NYC states, or Avaloncon? ;)

I propose we extend the World's to 'all' games played USA v World for the entire week of ASLOK....let's see how it shapes up then. OR...lets make it a single elim, one man standing thing... ;)

One to my knowledge, though others have come close :)

A major idea behind the World Cup was to get more American players to come along earlier in the ASLOK week, so extending it to the whole week might defeat this purpose a little, otherwise a great idea.

Brett?

Soccer...???

My twins played one year when they were about 5-6. They were pretty good...the kids would knot up in the middle...Alex would muscle his way in (he is the big one) and smack the ball out to Nathan (he is the fast one)...Nathan would streak down the field and pop it in the goal. We beat every opponent by 10-12 goals. Nobody ever figured out how to stop the dynamic duo.

That is the only time soccer has ever interested me...since then the boys have become enamored with baseball and Football (THANK GOD!).
