That implies one side is more important than the other. My medal for long service has the Queen's image on the obverse, which is significant. It's like having the Crown on top of any other imagery on a cap badge. The Calgary Regiment had to redesign their badges when a sunburst (from the city coat of arms) was found to be in violation of the convention that the Crown surmounts all. Likewise, the Canadian Provost Corps had a lion on top of the Crown - and to comply with convention, the lion wore a smaller version of the Sovereign's crown, so it could still be on top.They should be called boards NN obverse and NN reverse.
