Winter/Snow Map Boards

Are there winterized map boards of the regular ones? I’d like the look when playing winter time scenarios contained with Beyond Valor and those on the west in the winter of ‘44, early ‘45.

As far as I know. You should go into Terrain SSR and select Weather->Snow and make it Ground Snow and it will change to the snow open ground.

Hatten in Flames has a winterized board, but it is a historical (i.e. non geomorphic) one.

Critical Hit did a set of winterized boards but I think they were of their own design and didn't match the official boards.

It sure is something I'd like to see from MMP but I doubt we ever will, it would just be too big a job I guess

If you can print the maps, it is easy to use Paint to substitute white for the open ground green on a summer map.
The map images can be found on Texas-ASL.
Use a sheet of Plexiglas to hold the paper map flat.

Yeah, VASL has its advantages, I prefer ftf for the most part but VASL works as well and is actually better for playtesting, being able to save games and go back to them. Saves a TON of table space that could be tied up for a while. Winterizing all those ETO Geo boards could cost a LOT of $.

As Alan Hume said and I have posted pics on FB ASL forums , they have made several packs of winter maps, including HASL ones several module have normal and winterised ones. But MMP shy away from the thought of winterised Geomorphic with the idea of normal on one side winter on the other.

I kinda doubt it. How far do you take the transformations? Ground snow? Deep snow? Extreme winter?
Once you start down that road, where do you stop?

At the same time, they have the raw material in hand, and once Charlie gets his Winter Terrain set worked out, it should be a "light lift".

It's not trivial (I'm going through it now) but IMO well worth it. Shrug.

It does make it a bit more fun to play winter scenarios on snowy boards. The Panzer Grenadier folks did a set for Elsenborn Ridge scenarios, and they make it much nicer when playing those Bulge scenarios on the game table. But it seems a tough proposition to do all the ASL geomorphic boards that way, probably just best played in VASL for that effect.

I doubt it.

Too much money for not enough gain.

You would also need winterized overlays. And the winterization only addresses a single condition but no other terrain changes.

The best solution is, indeed, to create a VASL map with all the terrain alterations for a given scenario and print that on your home printer on thick paper.

MMP might want to consider a very limited run of a very small number of existing geo boards as winterized?! Perhaps as part of some "winter" campaign collection of scenarios.

The appearance of winter, whether if be Ground Snow, Deep Snow, or Extreme Winter, I guess, is about the same. Just a SSR indicating which version of snow.

Now, Mudified geo boards, would that be interesting?! Again, possibly a very small number of boards for a scenario pack involving a bunch of related Mud fights. No pun intended.

What aboout maps with plowed, out of season, grainfields?
What about PTO adapted transformations?
VASL does the job for free.
Making printed versions would have a too high cost for the marginal advantage provided.
Why not simply print a VASL winterized/modified map?
It is not as nice as a normal board, but it would be a cheap way to solve the problem.

Would it be nice to play a Winter scenario on a white board, with counters showing the Winter Camouflage that units are supposed to have? Yes, it would.

Would it be worth the increased cost to have all those extra boards, and overlays, and counters? This depends on who you ask, I believe. Some people love more counters, as the Broken Ground sets seem to show. Some would hate it. I have enough trouble as is with keeping my boards and counters organized, so I'd clearly not be interested.

Now, MMP have to decide whether to allot resources to producing such boards, with the clear knowledge that they would not sell as well as the original boards. This, in turn, would increase the cost per board. Apparently, they have decided that it is not worth the trouble.

For the cost of a full set of "winterized maps/ overlays", you could buy a good printer that prints at 11 x 17 and make your own map(s) using VASL. I know this has been said many times, but this is a very sensible work around.
