Last night I received and installed this update:
2024-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048685)

Today I have been unable to connect to the VASL server.

After looking a bit, it has the following note:

"Following the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected."

Now, this was the December 10, 2024 update, not the October 2024 update so I have no idea why that is listed as an issue with this update. Regardless, the "temporary fix" they provide doesn't do anything.

I have uninstalled the update, however, I still can not connect to the server at this time.

Any suggestions from the people who understand the underlying system issues with running VASSAL/VASL on a windows 11 platform?

I think that update knocked over my Logitech Lightning drivers (wireless) as well, and I had to revert drivers. I haven't had time to try the VASSAL server yet.

95% sure openssh is not involved in connecting to the VASSAL server.

Additionally. I'd say that the update is a red-herring.

Did you happen to check the VASSAL error log for extra info?

Nothing in the error log. I don't think the VASL connection timing out is recorded in there anyway. It is clear that it is not connecting since when I open VASL with an internet connection on my pc it takes forever to load as it cycles through the number of timeouts it has coded before it gives up trying to connect to the server.

It is interesting that you have the exact update I do yet you can connect. I don't have a clue now as to what is causing this.
I reinstalled VASSAL as well, but nothing helped there.

VASL. I open it from the VASSAL window.

Everything else on my computer is fine.
When I do an internet latency test it is 90ms, so that should not be a problem with timing out. (I have had that problem in the past).
I can't recall doing anything to my system after I stopped playing yesterday early morning.
Something is keeping that connection from happening.

VASL opens after some time, and I can do whatever I want other than connecting to the server. It is clearly a connection issue.

Edit:
I can also get the current server status data from within VASSAL.

It is not a VASL thing either, I can not connect to the TLD server with that module either.

I have tested my VASL/VASSAL and no problems there.
Does your VASL server preferences look normal?
Are you using a firewall/anti-virus other than Windows Defender?
That's about the limit of my ideas, except for trying again without any extensions.

Please post the errorLog from a run where you've tried and failed to connect to the game server.

So after shutting down my computer last night and figuring I would start looking this morning after my frustration level dropped, I now connect with no problems. This is the strangest thing I have experienced with VASSAL/VASL/TLD. It was clearly not something with those programs. Maybe it was something with my Wi-Fi device. I power it off every night, so that got reset along with establishing a new connection with the cell service. Sorry for all the drama but thanks for providing feedback to help.

As for the errorlog, there was nothing in it when I looked and at some point I deleted it since it was so long so that I could begin fresh this morning.

I am glad VASL works for you now.
When it froze last day, when I moved concealed Axis Minor unuts, it was very annoying - the problem was the labels I had written on the units...

Well, something similar happened to me yesterday:
For some reason, I could not connect Discord (neither app nor website). There was a Win10 Update pending. After the update, all of a sudden I had a Bamboo forest as my screen background (WTF?). Still no joy with Discord, but this morning, everything worked.

Now, are some Chinese hackers trying to steal the Oberst's tactics or what?!
