I predicted this LONG time before the Wii was released lol.

WSJ concerned about Wii owner health

The Capitalist's Bible, also known as the Wall Street Journal, gives a backhanded compliment to the Wii today saying it gets people off the couch, but "is turning out to be more exercise than some players bargained for." The article explores how people are beginning to develop -- wait for it -- "Wii elbow." One after another the WSJ serves up another poor soul who has been exerted by the Wii-ness. For example, Ryan Mercer lifts weights during the week but Wii Sports' boxing is pwning him, "I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe -- I had to go take a shower." The following morning he was so sore he had trouble getting his shirt on.

Nintendo's name-dropping spokesperson Perrin Kaplan is quoted in the piece saying she hasn't received any complaints about soreness. Serving back WSJ's backhanded compliment she says, "It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement ... if people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."

I've played Zelda for upwards of 50 hours this week and I'm absolutely fine....

Some of the Wii Sports games like boxing can be slightly tiring, but I'm certainly not sore because of it. I haven't even seen anyone break a sweat playing it....

Its probably just affecting those people who have bed sores on their rolls of fat because they never move from the couch. :D

lol did you read the article? The dude complaining is a weight lifter. There is no doubt it can cause strain. Any motion of any type without support can cause strain and eventually damage. Writing, Typing or even simply holding your arm out for extended periods of time.

Yeah, but I wanted to mention people with rolls of fat and bed sores to see who I could freak out :D

Normal gaming can cause strain too... and massive thumbs... We'll all look like extras from Wrong Turn.

He is a weight lifter.......soooo? , weight lifters dont mean flexibilty, if anything they would be the ones that suffer from the Wii as they probably have tighter muscles than the rest of us, its not as if the Wiimote is heavy, imo saying he is a weight lifter proves nothing.
Plus I cant really see that he wouldnt be able to put his shirt on the next day, I think this article has been exagerated greatly

Mike that incorrect. I was a weight Lift/Martial Artist at one time. Flexability is important in weight lifting.

I won't argue that it was exaggerated.

thing is, this sort of thing can happen in any repetitive motion. For all we know he could have followed his Wii gaming session up with a marathon session of porn :D

If waving a plastic 6 ounce remote control around for an extended time makes people sore to the point where they can't put their shirt on, what happens if those same people play the actual sport? Do they pass out? Go into a coma? Are they bedridden for a month?

Seriously, they're making this out to be more than it is. From personal experience, I can tell you that playing most of these games really is not tiring at all. If you play Wii Sports against friends, it can get pretty tough, but not even enough that would get you winded....

Typing can cause carpal tunnel and eventually paralysis and there is 0 weight involved. I don't get winded when I type...I don't even normally get cramps....however that doesn't mean I'm not capable of getting perm. damage.

I could give you guys exercises with 6 oz of weight that would make your arms feel like they are falling off...Its very possible...probably more then likely that someone will get some kind of damage from this...but thats the same with normal video games.

But this obviously isn't that kind of carpal tunnel injury. Repetitive stress injuries take a bit longer than just a day or two.

And even then, you're not going to be really feeling that with the Wii. When I play Zelda, I don't hold the wiimote directly out in front of my face like I'm some kind of Frankenstein; I rest it on my lap and use it that way. It's not even tiring at all. It's just like using a regular controller.

This isn't necessarily true. Carpal tunnel can take effect within days. But not to the point where your not able to put a shirt on.

But I disagree with the regular controller. From what I played I did get a little cramped. I was unable to rest the controller like I normally would. That could be from having to play different then normal...but still it was there.

Actually When I play Zelda, I'm more relaxed then when I play Halo or Something else. Mainly because my right hand isn't following my left hand so I get to spread them on My lap like I was sleeping or Something. And the game vibe to Zelda is pretty awesome :D

Btw Naluka Said it perfectly, know your limits. Also I think it's the person himself.

You were playing standing up, and therefore had to stick your arms out yourself. Playing any game like that could get tiring, simply because you have to hold your arms out.

Normally you'd sit down, and would just rest them on your lap. Not once have over this week have I thought "hmm, I'm getting kinda cramped; maybe I'll take a break".

I can type for hours on end without a single cramp...while other type the same period of time and need surgery. Its going to differ from person to person but human physiology has proven that any unsupported exercise can cause perm damage. The wii-mote is less supportive then a generic controller and as such will most likely cause damage more often then a regular controller. But by saying your find playing hours on end doesn't mean the next guy is. Muscle build, structure, athleticism doesn't matter so much.
