Any ASLers out there you may have known for a long time but never had a chance to play? Any "name" players you'd like to try your hand against? Any tourney opponent you somehow keep "missing"? Any asshole out there you'd love to play to "shut him up"? He he.

Whatever the reason, are there people out there whom you'd like to have the opportunity to play? Who are they?

There are a lot of people I'd like to be able to sit across the table from. For example, some of the French ASLers such as Laurent Closier, Fritz Tichy, and Jean DeVaux. I'd even play a Franc Tireur scenario. :)

Closer to home, I'd like to play some of the Texas ASLers, too, whose names have graced the pages of Banzai, such as Matt Shostak, Mike Senningen, Chas Smith.

Watching Peter Struijf at ASLOK this last year made me think he seemed like a fun opponent to play, so I wouldn't mind having a chance to play him.

And there are lots of others! When is the next ASLOK, anyway, dammit?

I want to get my head handed to me by Steve Pleva, just once. I'm sure that's all it would take ;)

He always seemed like a nice guy, though, and I've enjoyed watching him play a few games over the last 2 or 3 years.

I want to play you Mark

I want to play you Mark. You mentioned in one of your earlier threads that you only started playing ASL in 2001. Look how much you done for the hobby in such a short period of time. It shows you love the game. I am curious as why it took you so long to jump in with both feet?

Well the names Hill and Greenwood leap to mind :)

I also would like to fight a game against Curt Shilling (just so I could badger him about some ideas hehe).

But really, I doubt I would turn down anyone that wanted a game.

They would probably play better than me though.

I have heard the name J.R. Tracy a lot and would love to see how I would fare against one of the best in our hobby.

I also would really like to play Steve Pleva. I came one game away from playing him at a WWF a few years back but I played a mud scenario and immobilized everyone of my tanks on the first roll. Almost pulled it out but it was too much to overcome. Once again I would love to see how my game stacks up against one of the very best and I am sure I would learn a lot from both of them. I do play in a Fantasy Football league with Steve and I have beaten in him that, does that count for anything? :)

I can't really speak for Fritch, but I would guess that he's more or less like other Austrians, in the sense that he doesn't really like to be called French :p

For the record, I would like to sit down and play a game with Perry one day though (or any other of you Mexicans  )

Personally, I want to play against a nude centerfold with loose morals and a fetish for fat guys. I usually settle for the dumb goobers around here.

But I still never win. Sam Belcher beat me but it was real joy to play him.

That's kind of you, Jack. As to why I am such a johnny-come-lately, it is probably not an unusual story. I played SL "back in the day," but when ASL came out, I was in college and couldn't afford to try it. So I never made the "natural" leap. Some years later, I was able to pick up some modules cheap at a game auction at a gaming convention, and after that started purchasing the other modules in the system, thinking I might play some day. I even bought some TPP stuff. But I never really did play. A friend of mine and I did set up Fighting Withdrawal and played about a turn, but then something happened and we never did finish it.

It wasn't until 2001 and the 2nd Edition RB came out that I started to play. A friend of mine asked me if I was going to buy it. I said, "I dunno, are you gonna buy it?" We both felt a little foolish thinking about buying the 2nd edition rulebook of a game we had never even played the first edition of. So we agreed to buy the rulebook but commit ourselves to learning it and starting to play. We took a month to get familiar with the rules, then began playing, and never looked back.

What is unusual *for me* is how much ASL appealed for me. I have never really cared for tactical wargames, and only twice before in my life have I really gotten into a particular game or game system--mostly I have played a wide variety of games, but few intensively. In fact, much of my playing was solitaire. But once I started playing ASL, it really gripped me--I really really enjoyed it.

I had an opportunity to play J.R. Tracy last year and thoroughly enjoyed myself. We played a Critical Hit scenario, "The Warlord's Estate," and had a blast. I had a wounded leader manning a machine gun getting endless rate of fire, he had a squad digging a damn foxhole even as my tank was running him over!

I want a rematch! :)

I played Steve Pleva for the first time last year, too. He was a fun opponent. We played a little Franc Tireur scenario. I lost.

I would like to play ftf my good friends I have made on VASL. Adam Lunney, Jason Wert, and Xavier Vitry (of France). Our friendships have gone way back, and I've never even actually met any of them.

Matt and Mike have beaten me like their red-headed step child (no offense to any red headed step children out there) on more than one occasion. Would line 'em up with those two any time again (probably with the same result :crosseye: ). You'll definitely learn something every time you play one of them.

It was Xavier Vitry whom I meant to mention in my first post above. I had a brain fart and put Mr. Tichy instead, for which I was soundly drubbed, and rightly so. No offense to Mr. Tichy, whom I am sure is a great guy, but I meant Xavier, because I have had a lot of good interactions with him and would like to have a chance to meet him.

I want to play Chuck Payne...again and again and again.
I may not win, but I am going to be happy to go one game without losing every unit on the board.
Other than that, I have no wish list. I will play anyone.

Kenn, no, I won't be, darn it. I will be in Spokane this coming week to do a terrorism conference, and on friday I'll still be flying back. I don't think I get in until 11:00 or so.

Are you going to the CABS "day after Thanksgiving" thing? And what does your schedule look like for next Wednesday? I'd like to get my new game room warmed up a little! So far only one game played there!

By the way, James Maffei surfaced today! He may be coming over tomorrow afternoon (after the Steelers game), if you are interested in either playing or stopping by to say hi. Of course, he is always "iffy," so he may not show up at all. :)

Day after Turkey...cleared it with the wife yesterday; now to clear it at work. Wait, I already did.
Yep. Play a game then?
I have not spoken to James since ASLOK...03. Glad to hear that he is alive.
Wed? Not sure yet. But I would not mind getting in a game sometime soon.
