The greatest guitarest of all time is, of course, the late Gerry Garcia, god bless his soul, of the former Greatful Dead. No offense Mr. Hendrix, but no one could could flat out jam like Gerry, listen to some live Dead if u doubt me.

These aren't exactly metal guitarists, but all are great.

(1) Jimi Hendrix- still the best ever!

(2) Mark Knopfler- best finger picker

(3) Eric Clapton- king of the blues, plus he's played with almost everyone else on this list

(4) Stevie Ray Vaughn- Hendrix reborn, almost

(5) Richard Thompson- great finger picker with a Celtic background

(6) Carlos Santana- brought Latin overtones to rock, improved with age

(7) Eddie Van Halen- brought "tapping" technique to rock

(8) Jimmy Page- heavy blues, the father of all metal guitarists

(9) Bonnie Raitt- best slide player

(10T) Jeff Healy- self taught blind guitarist, with a playing style like no other

(10T) Billy Gibbons- Texas blues, Hendrix's favorite guitarist

hey all, I'm new to these parts but I saw this and decided to throw in my 2 cents worth. I voted for Dimebag Darrell because I think Pantera is one of the greatest metal bands. I also like Zakk Wylde. He can really rip it up with his Les Paul. I was visiting the Gibson website today and saw that he has authorized a version of his guitar in camoflauge. I thought it was pretty cool.

Axegrinders

Ace freakin' Frehley
Billy Gibbons
Angus & Malcolm Young (can't have one w/o the other.)
James Hetfield
Mick mufuggin' Mars
Honorable Mention; George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, Vivian Campbell, Zakk Wylde. What's the difference? They were all doing their "Randy Rhoads".
Let us not forget SRV.
Please just forget about Eddie Van Halen. That dude is so overrated. Define good. A million notes a minute? He was a much better songwriter.

I almost forgot Slash from Guns-N-Roses. I really liked him as well.

The one big thing that really bothers me about the metal and hard rock coming out today is that there are no guitar solos. The solo is what made metal metal. Damn record company people.

Greatest rock/metal guitarist

Although I'm probably going outside your intent, I will list two:

rock/metal - Jimmy Page - his driving, yet melodic playing must certainly be considered a model for guitarists of all sorts, all talents, and all ages. How many of his riffs are instanly recognizable?

general rock: Carlos Santana - hot, soulful licks, an absolutely distinctive, individdual sound. No one can make a guitar sing and cry like him.

B. B. King can but i forgot to put him. If you want some good guitar work buy the album "riding with the king" it's a whole album of B. B. King and Eric Clapton doing their thing. It is really great. If you like the blues.
