Following on a discussion in the main forum about APCR ranges, I'm curious what the longest possible unobstructed and unhindered LOS would be given the following parameters:
  • standard map configuration of 1 map wide and 3 maps deep
  • only non-desert, non-TPP ASL maps
  • any maps can be in use but none more than once
  • firer and target are ground units (not in a river hex in other words)
  • firer and target are on different map boards
  • no terrain markers in play (i.e. bridges)
  • grain and orchard are in effect
Board 19 looks promising. Has @von Marwitz already answered this?

I'm sure somebody else can come up with something higher, but I'll throw down 40 hexes as a baseline.
Board configuration:
19 (Flipped)
4 (though almost anything will do)
9 (Flipped)

Sight line is from 9DD4 to 19A10.

Allowing overlays would add quite a few hexes given a suitably wide beach coming off the far end of Board 19. Allowing use of the upper levels of building 19DD3 will had about a hex.

Turns out I wasn't ambitious enough-- a sightline also exists from 19A10 to 9DD2-- a range of 42.

For the record, the maximum hypothetical range for this board configuration (assuming no ocean overlays) is 45 hexes.

One map wide, three maps deep.
14365
15Y6 (level 4 hill) to 19GG4
Range of 88 it says.

Maybe not exactly what you were looking for but I had to see how far this was.

Addition: I calculated the distance to be roughly 3048.5 meters, about 1.9 miles.

The longest shot I have actually seen in a game was playing Operation Rosselsprung. Bob O'Connor spun an 81mm mortar to shoot Tito in his Trench. It was across 5 boards and a little diagonal. Range was > 54 hexes (I forget the actual range, I just recall it was on the last possible column of the TH chart). First shot was a miss given the CA change and DR, but he kept rate. Second shot was a miss but still rate. Third shot was a CH for the 30 -2 and a chance to win by eliminating Tito. Tito survived but was broken and routed into his cave and hid for the rest of the game. He wanted no part of that mortar. Sorry for the diversion from the hypothetical. Just thought you might be interested in an actual occurrence. -- jim
