When things warm up here to the point I can work in my garage again comfortably I would like to build myself a foldable gaming table.

My question is, "What is the largest map you've played ASL on?" I would assume it's the Red Barricades map but I don't have dimensions for the maps.

As a design note, I'm planning on it being 2 halves of plywood.
There will be latches to secure the halves to each other when using the whole size.
Each half will have a pair of collapsible legs like on long folding tables so they can stand on their own.
The table top will be covered in felt.
And, there will be a piece of trim around the whole table so pieces can't fall off, possibly a removable rim for the middle of the table so when separate, the two halves won't lose pieces either.

Red Barricades is small for a modern map.
Personally the largest I've played on was Dinant that I printed out at 4 foot by 6 foot. The eventual one might be smaller but not by ,such.
Then there is Objective Sch,it which is really very large. At least 4 get wide maybe more.
PGS is another one that did not fit on my 6foot by 2ft 8 table.

Largest one? Conservatively the RB map.

I don't believe that maps significantly larger do not make much sense. Their use requires dedicated furniture and a dedicated playing room where the map can remain set up in between play. The minority will have these assets available for ASL use or at all.

Difficulty with those very broad maps: You or your opponent will have to bend over a lot or to stand leaning over the map. This will become unpleasant in the long run. And in case the map has glare, then even more so.

So as cool as huge maps may be, if their size encroaches on practicability, then their size turns from an attraction into a burden IMHO.

Do you know what the size of the RB map is? What size of table would it fit on?

I pulled out the box:

31"x45" unmounted non-geomorphic mapsheet (in two 31"x23" sections)

That's for RB 1st edition, but I doubt that the maps of later editions differ in any significance for this.

KGP I has many more hexes than RB, but I don't think it's physically bigger.

How about, what's the largest geo map group you've played on? For PITA, the old Road To Wiltz, but in modern times, I'm not sure. Three boarders are rare now--I designed one of those but it is rarely played. I designed a two board scenario with one of the fort boards caping its end; that felt big, especially since the Russians entered from one end and had to exit the long way. The old action pack scenario The Ring was seven? Oops, almost forgot, Action at Balberkamp (SP?), the CoD scenario modernized for ASL.

Played Uber monster Berlin last November which was 6’ x 5’ using only 9 of the 33 panels.

I’ve just had delivered CH Juno which I believe is 12’ wide and 3’ deep.

KGS Cholm I think is bigger than RB, well the 20% larger one I have and played.

If you join sword, gold and Juno maps together it is over 36’ long

I am not sure that I remember. For sure, I played a scenario on 4 (full) geos, maybe 6.

Interesting. Some of those are too large to fit in my house.

For the others it looks like a pair of 4'x4' tables that can be joined will suffice and most games will fit on one of the tables.

I might be able to design it in a way that I can just add another few tables when I need to.

I'd just get long folding tables but I like the idea of the felt top and the smaller 4x4 sections that will store better,

Thank you everybody.

Objective Schmidt is my biggest.

Too big if anything. It fit on the game table, but everything else that normally sits on the table had to be moved off.
