Played solo game of Lock N Load's Forgotten Heroes 2 (Vietnam,squad-level) and found it is a fun game. Have another solo scenario lined up for tomorrow.
After that will try another 'Nam game--Sealords from S&T issue #243--the war in the Mekong Delta region. Looks to be an interesting operational-level game, with 3 scenarios included.

Dug out Open Fire (VG) and Starship Troopers (the orignal one). I'll get around to playing them. Figured with ST that if I was going play bug hunt I might as well play a real bug hunt.

Must download some thing before I loose my mind!

Starship Troopers is a great game! The extras from the General make it even better!

I've played the first two scenarios from LnL's WaW: Paris is Burning. Scneario 1 was a Soviet victory, Scenario 2, a draw.

Yup, and it's a great warm-up for the upcoming Rising Sun and G-T and its Cave Complexes.

I don't have a problem with bugs generally, they have an important place in the environment ... I just hate when bugs feel that their environment has now become the house (my environment).

... I have this one horrendous story about a roach, about 8 years ago. I usually keep a glass of sprite or water positioned near the bed, so when I wake up in the middle of the night & my mouth is dry (the room is very dry) I can just grab a quick drink instead of walking all the way to the kitchen when I'm sleepy. Well, this one night around 3am or so, a stinking roach crawled into my drinking glass. I picked it up to my mouth to drink and that roach ran out've my glass across my face; I was barely awake at the time, it was dark, & I FREAKED out  .... I spent the next 2 stinking hours on a "roach-hunt," from 3am to 5am (pissed-anger was my fuel that night), but I finally found that friggin roach. He got a 2 minute dose of Raid ant & roach killer :skull: . He was a big sucker too

... btw: love SST, several fond memories playing that game & I still have it too in my collection, though I haven't played it in over 20 years.

played "Settler's of America' - a combination of Settler's of Catan and a railroad game. Needed a '6' on my last turn to get enough coal to run my train for the last delivery and didn't do it. Last DR tension, almost like ASL.

PQ 17 from GMT. Bit of a slow burner. Allied convoys making their way to Murmansk. A good game for thinking player as there is plenty to think about in terms of deception and dummy blocks etc. Very difficult to locate the enemy, in what are generally very poor weather conditions. A random event in our last game allowed the Tirpitz to sally forth...devastation ensued as 8 Allied merchantmen, 2 escorts and cruiser were sunk in the only surface engagement we've had in 3 games.....

My son and I taught my niece (17), nephew (14), and brother-in-law (53) how to play Puerto Rico over the weekend...big hit with all three of them.

Started playing a buddy of mine, Kevin Earle, in MMP's Line of Battle series game None but Heroes...started with the really short, small intro scenario "The Charge of the Texas Brigade", then started but didn't finish the larger "The Cornfield" scenario. Hugely enjoyable experience. Struggled somewhat with the LOS rules, but Kevin (who has a lot more historical civil war tactical/strategic knowledge) thought the game did a really good job modelling civil war tactics and maneuver.

Neither scenario relied too heavily on the Command & Control rules relative to Issuing Orders, which another friend of mine has a few concerns with, but we both got a real sense of how brutal the nature of the warfare was during that era. The game got me interested in developing a better understanding of the history around the battle, so I picked up a copy of Antietam: The Soldiers' Battle by John M. Priest and damn, the balls it must have taken to fight in that battle left me amazed given the degree of carnage experienced by both sides.

I'm really looking forward to the next release in the series, Last Chance for Victory covering the battle of Gettysburg as it contains 22 individual scenarios in addition to several CGs. I'm not sure I will play the larger CGs in either game until I retire, but the individual scenarios seem highly manageable.

IMHO, the Command & Control rules are the best part of the system. They add much drama and tension. As long as both players play relatively close to the spirit of the rules, it should be a blast...

Steve,

Thanks. That was my initial impression as well although it appears from the rules wording/structuring that Dean definitely has a slightly different take on "player reasonableness" than most gamers would agree is the norm. :)

Still, I'm looking forward to getting more involved with the system.

GMT's Mr. Madison's War - The Incredible War of 1812. I have wanted to play this for a while and when our ASL gaming host showed up with a copy, I jumped at the chance to give it a whirl. We played the short 1814 scenario just to get the feel for the game. After reviewing the rules more thoroughly later that evening, I saw we goofed a bunch of rules. Regardless, we liked the flavor of the game and were surprised by the number of options available to both players. I will definitely play this again.

Comments based on This Hallowed Ground, the earlier version of G'burg:

I agree that the C&C rules are a lot of the fun. I was always disappointed that they had so little meaning in the smaller more playable scenarios.

Of course, one can argue that's what the monster scenarios are for, but when we tried to do the whole battle to see the C&C at its best, shuffling all those counters ended up being much more fiddly than expected, and got tedious. It will be interesting to see how much the new version is able to improve the experience.

I have all the games of the regimental sub-series.

I really wanted to like them (I thought the C&C rules sounded cool).

Alas, it was those games that made me realize that Gamers games are just not for me. I cannot put my finger on why (well one thing is I do not like their maps and find setting counters up a pain).

I debated on None But Heroes several times but never pulled the trigger. Not certain what the differences are between that system and the Regimental Sub-Series.

Peace

Roger
