The doubling cube mitigates the luck greatly. You never play one game to decide anything, it is always a match to some set number of points...

I know...I played a lot in college. Had a group of Iranian and Pakistani guys that were excellent, we played almost every day in the student union. These guys were no slouches...trust me, I know how to play Backgammon...bring a set to Albany, and some cash and we can play a bit if you want.
I also play about once a week at the Embassy of Turkey in DC, they are a client and when I go out there, we have a regular group who play each other for a couple of hours...they play every day, lol.
What I was stating, or meant to state, in my original post was that a single game of Backgammon can be very luck dependent...that is why matches are played with first to point wins the match...and why doubling cubes are used...and why there are so many rules on how and when you can double.
